As of last night, there was one person confirmed dead by the name of Sean Smith. While you might not know his name, if you played EVE online, you've probably hear of Goonfleet. Sean's handle was Vile Rat & he was a pretty prominent figure in the game. This made the tragedy hit a little closer to home, for me, as I used to play in Goonfleet & knew of him, but never had any direct interactions with him myself.

As of this morning, 4 are confirmed dead including Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens. All this over outrage from a Youtube video made back in July...

Tragic.

The correct response would be to locate the Libyan EVE Online Server and destroy a space station on it.

In Egypt, the appropriate response would be to increase security and have a Plan B in case things go violent. As frightening as it was for the staff at the time, a group scaling the walls, tearing down the flag and replacing it with another before being convinced to leave by the Egyptian police isn't grounds for anything more dramatic than that.

In Libya, the appropriate response is to work with the Libyan government to locate those responsible and bring them to justice. It sounds (but I don't know for sure) that the consulate building was destroyed so I suppose increasing security there isn't an immediate concern since we won't be functioning out of it. The Libyan government is blaming remnants of Ghaddafi regime loyalists for the attack which may or may not be true -- it's a very convenient answer but details are so sketchy that I won't begin to guess. Speaking of, al-Jazeera is reporting that the envoy dies of smoke inhalation at the consulate but, on the radio this morning, some US analyst said he died in an RPG attack on his car while he was being moved to a safe house.

[Edit: I guess we have other functioning diplomatic outposts in Libya since I just read that we're sending 50 Marines to protect them]

Increase consulate/embassy security in locations like Pakistan, Tunisia, Yemen, etc and work with the governments there as much as you can. This won't be solved with some over the top "America Fuck Yeah!" cowboy action.

Hahaha. Not up on current events in Libya, I see. The appropriate response is to covertly assassinate Muslim Brotherhood members in Lybia and Egypt. The appropriate diplomatic response is probably to pretend to do what you advocate.

I'm leaning towards assuming this is sarcastic, but in case it isn't: Yes, and ruin the Arab spring, complete with installing new genocidal dictators so long as their OUR genocidal dictators. While spreading democracy is theoretically an aim of US foreign policy, not one really takes that seriously. Certainly no one at Foggy Bottom or Langley.

Reports that the attack on the embassy was a planned assault and not any spontaneous action due to the film (although it gave nice cover). US launching drone flights over northeastern Libya. Who'd have guessed, huh?

I read it was a group of al Quaeda, reacting to the killing of some dude over the summer, and that some of the actual protesters turned on the others and tried to save the embassy staff.

I'm sure the flying killer robots have appropriate co-ordinates.

Here's a breakdown of Apologygate!! and why Romney got it wrong. (FWIW, the writer is a moderate conservative.)

Link
Quote:
[...]
For the next several hours, the embassy used its Twitter feed to answer questions and objections. “We condemn this effort [by] misguided in[div]iduals to abuse universal right of free speech,” the embassy told a Muslim inquirer. Minutes later, it affirmed, “Freedom of speech is a universal human right, but that will not stop us from condemning misguided, uninformed actions.” When a Christian Tea Party activist asked, “Why are you condemning the 1st amendment rights of US Citizens?” the embassy replied that “we're not condemning rights, we're criticizing specific statements, a right guaranteed by freedom of expression.”

By Tuesday afternoon, protesters had scaled a wall at the compound. The chairman of Maryland Young Republicans, a Christian, accused the embassy staff of ignoring the incursion: “Am I correct that @usembassycairo apologized TO people who invaded our sovereign embassy and tore down our flag?” The embassy shot back: “we did not apologize to anyone because we did nothing.” To other critics, the embassy explained, “Of course we condemn breaches of our compound, we're the ones actually living through this.” It added: “Sorry, but neither breaches of our compound or angry messages will dissuade us from defending freedom of speech AND criticizing bigotry.” An hour later, the embassy concluded: “This morning's condemnation (issued before protest began) still stands. As does our condemnation of unjustified breach of the Embassy.”
[...]
Three hours after the embassy finished these comments, the U.S. confirmed a lethal attack on its consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Within half an hour, Romney launched a political assault on the Cairo embassy’s statements: "It's disgraceful that the Obama Administration's first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks.”
[...]
Romney’s description of the embassy’s initial statement—“sympathizing with those who had breached our embassy in Egypt, instead of condemning their actions”—was blatantly false. When the embassy issued its morning statement, no one had breached the wall. After the breach, when the embassy tweeted that its initial statement “still stands,” it added in the same breath: “As does our condemnation of unjustified breach of the Embassy.”

Also, it's a good thing this whole statement-issuing outrage fest is so easy to digest, wouldn't want anyone to have to contemplate the complex issue of the attacks themselves or of muslim sentiment in the region.

I am sad a friend of mine was killed. A man named Sean Smith, his life taken in Benghazi. I met Sean in an internet spaceship game, EVE online. Most of the time we spent shooting each other and our friends. Its sad that hate can ruin lives in such a way, it is crazy that hate can show one how small the world truly is.

I have never met him, and likely never would have, outside of the universe of New Eden that is. It is a sad day for me and my EVE friends, it is even sadder I am sure for his family and friends. The community of EVE is either awe struck or grief struck, the universe has held its vigil, Cyno's have dotted the star map from north to south, player owned stations have paid homage to their fellow pilot Vile Rat.

I don't know if I am truly sad sad, I have never experienced death in my life, this is the closest thing to a personal loss that I have had, and it is very disheartening. I remember talking about diplomatic stuff with him when he was in Baghdad, and he had to leave all of the sudden. In the middle of a 20 man diplomatic meeting he left because there were explosions and gunfire in his vicinity, a while later he returned and told us it was just us shooting at an enemy convoy.

Apparently his EVE community was the last to hear his voice, not his wife, or kids, but his friends in internet space ship games, a similar story but one he did not return from. Crazy how small the world is, crazy that I feel sad for a person I have never met, for a person who, had I never played EVE would be another statistic in an ongoing war against hate.

Sorry for bumming out the thread, but I just need to make words.

RIP Vile Rat. NBSI or BSI it doesn't matter, fly safe mate o7

To make a long story short, I don't take any responsibility for anything I post here. It's not news, it's not truth, it's not serious. It's parody. It's satire. It's bitter. It's angsty. Your mother's a *****. You like to jack off dogs. That's right, you heard me. You like to grab that dog by the bone and rub it like a ski pole. Your dad? ***. Your priest? Straight. **** off and let me post. It's not true, it's all in good fun. Now go away.

Amy Davidson voiced what should be the concern of every responsible Republican or undecided independent voter:

Quote:
Romney has managed, in a couple of short vignettes, to showcase so many of the qualities that make people doubt him: the eager opportunism; the indifference to the truth; a certain arrogance; his clumsiness and near-incompetence as a diplomat; the sense that he doesn’t understand what it means for a person to be in hard circumstances, or even danger. The stakes here though, unlike with Bain, are not just people who are losing their pensions—though that is bad enough—but wars that could start, governments that could fall. What compass would he have if he had to manage a major crisis?
