Those are new "Internal ad skins". Marketing decided to implement them.

Marketing needs to have their heads examined then. I normally refrain from blocking ads from this site because I know that's how you get revenue (and I don't pay premium, so I figure that's fair). Ad block doesn't get rid of the issue (just replaces it with a fully black border), but I'll be blocking all ads on this site until the side borders are eliminated. It makes the site ugly as sin (And I get a sad face every time I see the plea to white list the site), but it's ugly as sin right now anyway.

WTF were they thinking? Some of us like to resize our windows in order to make the space with the words in it (the part we actually use) more visible. Now, you're eating up that space with a big ol black border. For no reason at all. I can make the border disappear if I narrow the width of my window, so it's not like you're forcing me to see the ads. You're just forcing me to view the site in a smaller window frame than I'd like.

CTRL + PlusKey

Which changes the resolution/font, not the relative viewable size of the frame. I want to see more stuff on the screen. Given my typing style, it should be obvious why. Smiley: tongue

Meh, the day they fucked with the forum layout in order to cram in more ads was the day they reneged on their promise that premium users wouldn't be affected by advertisements and I knew it was time to give up paying for the site. Now they just get AdBlocked and Grease Monkey'd into something sort of resembling what I used to pay for.

I'm still confused about what they think they're accomplishing, other than annoying people.

If I set my window size to 986 pixels wide, I see no black border or Wow images. The Frame with the usual forum stuff completely fills the window. No scroll bar either. If I extend it any wider than that, all of that extra width is taken up with black borders on the right and left. So I extend it to 1600 pixels, and I've got the exact same sized forum frame floating between 3 inch wide black borders on each side.

I can't figure out what possible marketing advantage they think this gives them. Anyone who doesn't want to see the ads can eliminate them by shrinking the width of the window without shrinking their visible/usable forum space at all. All it really accomplishes is pissing off people who'd like to view the forum in a wider format. I have absolutely no reason to leave my window sized wider just to see the ad, do I? And neither does anyone else. So no ad being viewed, but pissed off customers equal really really really stupid marketing.

And on top of that, no ad revenue for the normal banners that they might otherwise be getting. Please tell me this is a temporary thing.

Advertising to people. More people are like me than you when it comes to computer skills so most aren't adjusting their screens.

It isn't. Apperently part of the justification is that only 20% of non premium users ever even see the existing ads because of adblock.

So rather than working to attract more paying premium users, the answer is to push more of the non-premium users towards finding ways to block the intrusive ads.

Makes sense.

In my template the forum takes up pretty much the whole width of the window. How does it look for you Joph? I've given you premium for a couple days.

resolution 1366x768. I don't have a bigger monitor where I am right now, and I don't recall if the forum grows or not.

Looks like zam.com sucks vs the wow.allakhazam.com template.

Wow, yeah, that's terrible.

WOW template looks a lot nicer and comes close to the borders for me. Again, I'd have to check it on a wide screen.

I use the TOR template. By far the most pleasant of the options, imo.
