We just got notice of flu shot clinic. I only have to walk across the lawn and show my insurance card for a shot. It couldn't be easier. The vaccine is safe - even mercury free for the most part these days. Still, I've never had one.

I'm not at all afraid of needles, so why do I resist?

Do you get an annual flu shot?

Mandatory, because the military thinks its best that I have a really bad cold next week.

I had the Spanish flu about ten years ago and I've gotten my flu shots religiously ever since.

I'd rather not spend three days huddled miserable over a toilet bowl again.

I've never gotten one, I hate needles. I've seen plenty of people in my life still get sick or "sick" after getting a flu shot, so it's just trauma I avoid and take my chances.

Have never had one, don't plan on getting one. I figure if I get sick I get sick, and given the track record of Flu Shots getting people sick, id rather not, because I don't like being sick. I am sure the ol lady doesn't like it either because I am a huge baby when i get sick. (which thankfully only happens 1-2 times per year.)

Nope, don't get them.

Generally needles being poked into me makes me feel like I'm going to throw up and stuff. Figure it's a guaranteed feeling sick now, versus maybe or maybe not feeling sick later. Being a rather spry young adult still without much worry of the flu killing me, I'm happy to abstain from all the poking.

I had thought about that. I never really see it around though. I mean I suppose if I went into a doctor's office, but everyone around here at least (work, supermarket, etc) seems to use the traditional jam-a-neddle-in-your-arm approach.

I tried the mist once. Has the added benefit of horrible after taste.

I don't think the flu shot has anywhere near the incidence of side-effect symptoms some of you are claiming. I also think a reasonable adult should be able to suck it up and take a needle. Think of it as a point of pride of something you can endure.

Post nasal drip?

I'd rather have a shot than try and snort something (I failed at cocaine). I think though that the mist is the one that has no thimerosal (the organic mercury containing stuff).

I signed up for a shot.

Well, there is your kid to consider (getting or giving to them) specially now she's in school. The flu is notably contagious.

The one year I didn't get a flu shot is the year I got the swine flu. Most miserable 4 days ever, and then 2 months of a very bad cough with a pretty weak immune system. My doctor was surprised I didn't contract pneumonia that winter.

Why would whether it contains Thiomersal be an issue?

Back to the original question: I get flu about once a decade, so I rarely bother. I'll probably pay for that one of these days.

I work in health care so while it's not strictly mandatory, it is strongly encouraged. It's also free for me. I've never had any side effects from the shot itself, but I know some people that have, and it's no where near as bad as the flu. Maybe I'm just not a pansy or maybe my arm just isn't that sensitive, but I barely feel the shot at all, just a slight burning while it's being injected. If you don't like needles, just turn your head and not watch, it's a few seconds of mild discomfort for a fairly significant benefit.

Like most organomercury compounds it's highly toxic in it's pure form. It's also responsible for many of the allergic reactions to vaccinations. However, it's been used safety and effectively to preserve vaccines for years.

Sure, but there's 50 times more Mercury in a tuna sandwich. Really allergic reaction is the only thing that's going to harm you in any way.

That's besides the point though, it's not used any more, I don't think. At least, not in Childhood vaccinations. Pretty sure they don't use it for flu shots either.
