I saw these 'gaming' glasses for sale on woot. The Gunnar computer eye-wear site claims that these revolutionary glasses reduce eye strain. Here is their claim:

Admittedly yellow lenses will reduce glare off a screen. In fact I had a pair of yellow-tinted reading glasses that I used to wear when doing much reading on my computer (then i lost them). I paid twenty bucks for them. More than I typically pay for readers but not outlandishly expensive. However, they made no claims about reducing eye strain.

I get a bit skeptical whenever I see 'proprietary' in a product description. I mean any scientist with a lab should be able to figure out what this special lens stuff is and presumably they have a patent - so what's the big deal? They're asking eighty bucks for a pair of glasses that wont even keep the sun out of your eyes.

I'm of the mind that any reported reduction in eye-strain when using these glasses fall firmly under the placebo effect column.

Anyone used these things?

I'd pass. The claims are vague, and the tech behind them seems to be deliberately esoteric. Seems bogus.

I would wait for the Oculus Rift to be finished, they seem more practical for gaming than a pair of fancy sunglasses.

I'd see if you can find another of the $20 pair, or get some cycling glasses. Something like this is $8.

Oh, I hadn't intended to buy them. They don't even come with magnification. Useless I say.

They make the screen easier on the eyes at night by tinting everything yellow, sure, but a much better solution is something along the line of F.lux. It removes the blue light from the screen when the sun goes down, removing a lot of headaches and sleep issues. So yes, they're functional, but you can just download an easier fix.

While I do know that yellow tints improve visual acuity I can't really say that I'd want to wear yellow tints while gaming.

In addition to gaming, I spend a lot of time in front of a monitor for business. I had my optometrist give me a prescription for a pair of computer glasses where she asked the distance between where I normally sit and my monitor and then set up the eye machine for that distance to develop the prescription.

I can tell you that these glasses were worth every penny which really wasn't all that much. Eye strain gone ...period. BIG difference.

Side note, I got the frames in a style that make me look like a SCH. Bonus!

Not for a hundred bucks, anyway.

$1.29 - and they're ANSI rated safety glasses to boot.

But would they cool to wear when gaming?

My friend has some gaming glasses that I think were tinted yellow or something and reduced eye strain. He used them when we'd play tf2 for hours.

No clue if they work or not though.
