Well, the Olympics is over and apart from some black fellas from the Carribean, New Zealand won again!

And apart from some massive bint who won silver in the shot-put all of our medals were won sitting down.

New Zealand. Best in the world at sitting around! And BBQ's....

I enjoyed that all immensely. Especially the TaeKwondo, the weightlifting and the rowing.

Whats next?

Wouldn't a more accurate "per population" for "winning" be medals per participant?

Looks like the US did fairly well, not that I watched many of the events. Really, the only events I bothered to watch were the Women's Gymnastics. Our midgits did fairly well, even if the girl who was the favorite for the vault did choke. Aside from that I pretty much ignored the games.

I watched a lot of the swimming since quite a few members of the women's swim team were from my uni, and they kicked ***. One rising senior is bringing home two gold medals. She'll probably get a special wall on the natatorium or something.

I watched bits and pieces when nothing else was going on (and of course, any excuse to watch muscular men in tights, or speedos) ... I did keep up with the totals of medals though on the website. My final thoughts though, the closing ceremony is outshining the opening one by far.

Higher population means a larger chance of finding great athletes in there. The 100 best athletes of a country of 300 million are likely to be better on average than the 100 best athletes of a country of 10 million people, even if they both send an equal amount of players, you can bet that the large country is going to take home more wins.

So basically, neither way of measuring is really accurate. At the end of the day you can only really look at what medal a country won that were unexpected and where there weren't any medals won even though there was a realistic chance to do so and then figure out if you're satisfied as a country or not.

That all said, I immensely enjoyed the cycling road races and the hockey tournaments, didn't watch much else.
It was really sad that the Dutch men only took home hockey silver though, after the absolutely phenomenal play they showed in the semi finals, pushing aside Britain with 9-2 they couldn't quite get up to speed vs the Germans. The women took home gold as expected of them, although it was a struggle in the semi finals against New Zealand, having probably the best keeper in women's hockey today helped them win that though.

In that case, Grenada wins.

Except that list is still country population per medal earned.

I watched the end of the Woman's Judo competition, which was remarkably boring. Then I read the Japanese governor called western judo "barbarians fighting," and I figured it'd be much more exciting if they used battle axes and claymores and such.

The women carried the US.

I was able to spend one rainy vacation day at my dad's lake watching the team synchronized swimming. What those women can do seems gravity defying. Why don't men compete in synchronized swimming?

For accuracy you should create a chart that shows medal count per capita for white people. Smiley: rolleyes

Because the La Fédération Internationale de Natation says so.

Maybe. Depends on whether all that money they spent renovating the East End actually pays off by attracting business or not.
