Posted: Aug 29 2012 at 9:59 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) The Cayman island "flag" is a simple variation of the red ensign (there are several "countries" that fly that flag with only simple differences) and it is almost always referred to as the red ensign or Union Jack not the Cayman Island flag (unless your ABC news or a petty little partisan)
Except the part where it's a simple variation of the blue ensign, like several other flags in the world. That, you know, still doesn't mean they don't have their own flag, but at least you're trying.

It's a red ensign;But that's irrelevant, It's the official Cayman Isles flag.
The blue is used for state property, and the red is for civilian usage.

Obviously the best defense to a story about Romney's upper tier contributors getting wined and dined on a yacht flying a foreign flag and registered to the Cayman Islands is to nit-pick the details on whether or not it's a "real" Cayman Islands flag. Because that's the detail people will care most about (assuming they care at all).

That's all well and good, but it's not exactly noteworthy. I wouldn't expect anyone's pre-held political leanings to take a backseat to the fact that they once taught someone in high school.

It's irrelevant anyway. The obvious bad optics come from the Cayman Islands connection with regards to Romney's off-shore accounts. No one who cares (and I posted just as a "ha-ha!", no one is suggesting this boat will decide the election) is going to say "Oh! The flag was missing a symbol? I used "countries" because that is what technically some of the places that use the "red ensign" are but the fact is that I have more people coming to my house Saturday to watch College football than some of these places have citizens.
