Over the weekend at a campaign stop Barry made this statement:

"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet."

Even for Barry who has never run a business, never had to meet a payroll, or never had to work 7 days a week 12-15 hours a day to build up a business so that it becomes successful enough to hire employees and become profitable this comment is beyond scary. (and shows his child like understanding of business)

How is he wrong? People don't become successful in a vacuum.

You receive education, you use infrastructure. Unless you want to pretend that all business owners are self-taught and build their own fucking roads and such?

Also according to your own logic, you've never been President of the USA, so you can't comment on how he does his job.

He's actually riffing off Elizabeth Warren, who said pretty much the same thing early in her senate run.

Businessmen like to think they did it all by the sweat of their brow, but they wouldn't have a business if they didn't have a product people wanted, and hadn't gotten some lucky breaks along the way.

- The bank that gave them their first business loan
- Their first employees, who were enthusiastic and did a good job that impressed clients or customers
- Their current employees, who continue to support their success
- Their community, for welcoming the business and supporting it
- Other businesses, such as supply chains, or accountants, etc, who are willing to work with them

Businesses don't form in a vacuum. By their very nature they require human interaction. It's common sense that someone with a successful business got, at the very least, a handshake at a critical moment at some point in the formation of the business.

It was a poor choice of words, and nothing more than that. The intended meaning was that if you own a business, you've received help along the way in many forms, and from many sources.

If you open a small business, unless you're already quite wealthy, you probably need a loan or grant from a bank or another individual, institution, or what have you, just to get started.

If your business needed to be literally built from the ground up, you had to have help from people in construction, as you're likely not building it with your own bare hands in this day and age, at least not completely.

If you're successful, it means you had clients and/or customers who decided your business was the one they wanted to frequent.

Basically, sure, you built your business, but the community around you helped make it happen, they helped build it every step of the way. As I said, he worded the statement the wrong way. We've all worded things wrong, you have too, whether you'll admit it or not, it's only human, it happens. Get off your high horse.

Someone elsewhere points out that "that" doesn't refer to "your business" at all. It refers to roads and bridges.
Quote:
Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

Which is certainly true even if you're in the roads & bridges construction game since I doubt you unilaterally fund and build your own roads around this great land.

Personally, I'm too lazy to go listen to the original audio because the basic message is the same either way and not one I disapprove of: Top to bottom, we're in this together. I know this is his point because he said it next (but it wasn't scary enough to quote in the OP):
Quote:
The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together.

So, yeah. Smiley: snore

I listened, then went back are read the transcript. It seemed to me like he was saying that someone else built the bridge or the road that was necessary for you to build your business - you didn't do it by yourself. Sloppy grammar by both the Pres and transcriptionists could lead to lots of different interpretations of that statement. I'm glad you posted here as a party-line toting sensationalist to explain tell us what idea Barry really wanted to express.

I'm sure what the president meant to say was, "I'm a dirty socialist."

Don't be scared. We're here for you.

Found some wild lemons and sugar cane, planted and grew while carrying buckets of water from a natural spring to create a lemonade business that to this day has made him a self-made multicentaire.
