I'm just wondering but, what exactly is American about this salad? Is it just me, or does this salad just sound random vs. American? I mean unless you decide that anything with bacon in it is American... but goat cheese? Really?

It is one of the daily specials at my work cafeteria:

Quote:
AMERICAN SALAD

Goat cheese, bacon, corn, grape tomatoes,

black bean salsa, apple cider vinaigrette

The bacon.

Or the "melting pot" theory; multiple nationality-esque ingredients in a single food item sort of deal. Though the bacon is clearly the most important.

Corn and tomatoes are distinctly New World produce that didn't exist in Europe before 1492. I suppose that sort of makes them American. To me, bacon always screams Italian since they have so many different forms of cured and/or smoked pork products they use in their dishes.

Corn and black beans is a distinctly southwest flavor. That's not to say it's American in nature, but maybe that's where they're coming from.

The obvious answer is that Americans love to fatten up their healthy foods with Bacon and Cheese.

I don't know where you are, but California is known for producing a decent amount of goat's milk cheese. They don't come close to France's production, but they are known for it.

I guess since "American Cheddar" is processed food product, I was genuinely surprised that goat cheese would be associated with America. It seems a little too posh, you know?

Thank god, I remember reading an article a while back about how people have a fear of blue foods. Think about it, there really aren't any true blue foods. Blueberries are more violet colored. Plums are definitely purple.

That said, blueberries are the standard go-to for making red, white & blue foodstuffs. Usually on a vanilla topped cake or cheesecake and sharing the stage with strawberries.

Yeah, I know. I was just trying to play up the blue food phobia, despite the fact that I love blueberries. And nice link Joph. The guy in that article had a much more coherent argument than on a few of the sites I was reading.

We put borage in our salads at home (we grow it) - it is a blue edible flower: PIC

Huh, maybe I'll make a REAL american salad for dinner tonight, with borage, tomatoes and a suitably delicious white food... maybe I'll just use white cheese of some kind...

And borage even looks a bit like a five pointed star!

Mmmmkay thanks for helping me figure out dinner. I think veggie dogs with american salad will be on the menu tonight. Happy 4th of July folks.

Also, if I had bought this, you would be right, but I am smart enough to rarely eat at the work caf. Though I get lazy and hopeful and check the specials just in case something doesn't sound terrible.

We have hot dogs, cheddar dogs and Polish sausage from the butcher, sweet corn and various forms of salad that don't involve lettuce.

Too posh? We're not all back water hicks you know... I personally love goat cheese.

The problem with American culture is that we have so many different types of cultures, it's hard to point at distinct things and say "Hey, that's American!" Unless you start talking about stuff like hamburgers, hot dogs and apple pie.

To be fair, internally, we divide it up because we know the differences between the various regions of the US, which, combined with our history, is what makes it so damn difficult for us to pick out something as universally "American Culture" One would think similar internally obvious regional differences in other countries would give them a similar issue, but then you remember that America is, geographically, ******* enormous compared to most of the world. I've heard many terms used to describe those shows, but "back water hicks" hasn't been one of them.
