Arbitrary to some degree, although professional meteorologists accept this definition.

And, if you insist on defining it by the sun, the solstice should less-arbitrarily be the midpoint of summer, not the start of it. (Some cultures do go by this method).

I've always thought that was weird...solstice being the start, that is.

Meteorological summer starts June 1st Smiley: schooled. Why people refer to astronomical summer as the common start date is beyond me.

Because that's what my calendar says and I don't give enough of a shit to argue with it Smiley: schooled

I've noticed that the vast bulk of hot days in Australia happen AFTER the Summer Solstice. I have a theory that the first "half" of astronomical Summer" warms up the water and earth. During the last half of astrological Summer, and well into Autumn/Fall, the heat from the sun is compounded by radiant heat stored in the earth and water.

By the way, a week of 122F and over (50C) in the city a couple of Summers back. Not impressed with you pansies.

Exxon CEO admits to fossil fuels causing global warming; suggests we all just deal with it.

AP wrote:
ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson says fears about climate change, drilling, and energy dependence are overblown.

In a speech Wednesday, Tillerson acknowledged that burning of fossil fuels is warming the planet, but said society will be able to adapt. The risks of oil and gas drilling are well understood and can be mitigated, he said. And dependence on other nations for oil is not a concern as long as access to supply is certain, he said.

Tillerson blamed a public that is "illiterate" in science and math, a "lazy" press, and advocacy groups that "manufacture fear" for energy misconceptions in a speech at the Council on Foreign Relations.
[...]
Tillerson, in a break with predecessor Lee Raymond, has acknowledged that global temperatures are rising. "Clearly there is going to be an impact," he said Wednesday.

But he questioned the ability of climate models to predict the magnitude of the impact. He said that people would be able to adapt to rising sea levels and changing climates that may force agricultural production to shift.

"We have spent our entire existence adapting. We'll adapt," he said. "It's an engineering problem and there will be an engineering solution."

He'd really appreciate it if we all dealt with it by cranking the AC and making sure everyone else globally gets AC in their place to crank up as well.

Yes, and successful adaptation will be directly linked to wealth.

Nice to know that the our nurturing Oil Companies share no blame in this global warming mess. Stupid ignorant masses messing up our world again. Smiley: bah

(CEO could use a better speech writer)

Destroying the environment in a way that produces more demand for the product that destroys the environment is just a perk.

I'm not the one trying to shirk off my responsibility. I'm the one that has resorted to car-pooling, biking and walking but still has to chose an automobile that uses gas or one that uses more gas, i'm the one that has to heat my home with oil because the oil lobbyists have successfully kept natural gas out of my state, I'm not the one that is blaming the the public and the media for the mess that I've made and have refused time and again to clean up and I'm not the one making multi-millions/year in bonuses.

The oil companies stay in business with the goal of maximizing profit.
