George W. Bush's Decapitated Head Appears on Game of ThronesFollow

#1 Jun 14 2012 at 12:18 PM Rating: Good
Found this on Google+ earlier. I don't watch the show, so I don't know much about it, but I find it interesting that people are getting so worked up about it. I get that we're supposed to respect our Presidents (past and present), but it's just a decapitated head. If it was of a celebrity, even one well liked, I don't think people would get as upset. It was the first season of the show, their budget was probably really low. I don't think it's that far of a stretch to believe them when they say they were just using what resources they had.

The picture does more so. Meh. I think the director was an *** to mention it, and for the record I do think it's disrespectful.

Why is it disrespectful though? I'd agree that the director shouldn't even have mentioned it, and it's likely no one would have even noticed it. Would you find it disrespectful if it was some other sort of famous person?

I'd think it was disrespectful even if it were that piece of **** Nixon. Game of Thrones gets translated and broadcast into several other languages. I'm not sure I want that image out in the world, frankly, and not because it's Dubya, but because it's a POTUS.

Given that it was at the far edge of a scene, facing away from camera, with a non-GW-Bush wig on, that no one would ever have even noticed, I'd say it being a case of limited resources or even just a little on-set joke are credible, and that this is a non-issue.

Seems completely fine to me. Non-issue.

That's probably true. If that were the case, I'd like to think I'd be as on the fence about it as I am now, but I'm not positive.

I watched that scene and didn't notice GW there, so while there is a resemblance it's unnoticable if you're not actually looking for it.

Whether it was intentional or not, gees, hard to say. Set designers have to model the faces off of something and GW's face was very visible for awhile. I'd say it was concievable that it was made in the likes of George but unintentionally so.

Looking at the still photo, I think the head on the wall next to GW Bush resembles GHW Bush.

As I noted in the Game of Thrones thread in the TV forums, they also killed off the first (black) king of Qarth, the only recurring black character on the show (we haven't seen Sallador Saan since early season 2).

No shouts of racism for that one. /shrug

Where is the proper place to put the fake decapitated head of still-living president if not an epic epic-fantasy HBO story.

I wonder if George is ****** or amused?

Yesterday someone directed me to a google search for Allakhazam. It made me wonder just how fricken big Allakhazam's head must be.

I think I'd be inclined to join the outcry if W was still in office. I'd laugh about it, same when I snickered when that reporter threw his shoe at W and he ducked, perfectly, but I'd also be a little miffed since it's mocking the possible death of a sitting president.

Since I know he's safe in his mansion in Texas (he sold the ranch), I'm more inclined to let the slight slide as a funny coincidence.

Why would you put a moderately current political statement in an era piece fantasy story to begin with? All it is is a distraction.

Ash was guessing, I quoted the actual explanation. Call it an official confirmation of Ash's guess, which is why I'm perplexed that there's still any speculation going on either way.

Because people lie? There is the possibility that the director and whoever could just have been saying that it wasn't a political statement, when it was. I think it's more likely that they're telling the truth, but I also recognize that they could be lying about it too.

*shrug*

A simple and perfectly reasonable explanation was provided. I'm inclined to take it at face value and be done with it. Occam's Razor, folks.

Anyone really think that it was put there as a political statement, then hidden so that nobody could actually discern the face, then uncovered again when they mentioned it themselves in the DVD commentary by saying "It’s not a choice, it’s not a political statement. We just had to use whatever heads we had lying around.”, by which they'd be implying that it was political by saying exactly the opposite. Any takers?
