Because people lie? There is the possibility that the director and whoever could just have been saying that it wasn't a political statement, when it was. I think it's more likely that they're telling the truth, but I also recognize that they could be lying about it too.
A simple and perfectly reasonable explanation was provided. I'm inclined to take it at face value and be done with it. Occam's Razor, folks.
Anyone really think that it was put there as a political statement, then hidden so that nobody could actually discern the face, then uncovered again when they mentioned it themselves in the DVD commentary by saying "It’s not a choice, it’s not a political statement
