More successful than the NFL?

And I really don't care for NBA basketball, but I do watch SportsCenter while getting ready in the morning and with the playoffs going on it seems to be all they talk about. I'd much rather have a discussion about the Stanley Cup playoffs than the NBA playoffs.

The really interesting series is going to be the Thunder against the Spurs in the Western conference finals. The Thunder do have the young, injury-free legs to push the tempo for 48 minutes and that could give the Spurs all kinds of problems. We have to hope the Western playoffs are interesting, because with the Bulls out the East just looks like who wants to lose to the Heat, despite the Pacers taking game 2 last night,

OKC does have me a bit nervous, but I don't like to look past the current series. I do hope that the Lakers can put in just enough effort that the two of them beat each other up a bit. Every other series that goes the distance = more rest for Timmy's 87 year old legs.

I actually kinda like that Pacer team. Like the way they play D, and I like that they're not intimidated by the Heat. I'm still taking Miami to win, but with Bosh down, the Pacers can push them a lot harder than I expected. And I'd say that you can definitely break LeBron if you push him hard enough. It remains to be seen about D-Wade. He was flirting with a suspension on that body check from behind last night. He's lucky the league treats him with kid gloves.

Yes. The NFL is about 30% white, the NBA is about 17% white.

There's nothing to discuss. LA will beat either the Rangers or the Devils.

I'm rooting for Boston, but am prepared for disappointment. OKC's thrashing of the lakers was pretty sweet. The Pacers/Heat got interesting with Bosh down, so Lebron's not quite a lock for the finals. I would hope, as always, for a Lakers/Celtics championship. ( I'm thinking I'll get a Heat v Spurs one.)

My team, the New Orleans "We need a new nickname because we gave the Jazz to Utah and stole the Hornets from Charlotte and there are so many better options for a New Orleans based team", didn't make the playoffs, so all I can do is speculate.

Sorry for your Spurs, but I think the entire basketball world would love to see a Miami-OKC Finals because who doesn't think Lebron and the Durantula are the most exciting players in the leaue right now. Of course, this is assuming Kobe can't throw the Lakers on his back and carry them to one more Finals.

As far as the Heat getting past the Pacers, I think Bosh will be back soon enough that the Heat should survive that series in 5 or 6 games. The Celtics and the 76ers could go the distance, though. I see the Spurs and the Thunder both winning their series in 5 games. The Clippers are hurting and the Lakers are old at the wrong positions. It's easy for an older big man (like Duncan) to still be a presence. But when it's your star shooting guard (like Kobe) who's been being beat up for years, it's a lot harder on the team.

Surely not at the hands of Philly, right? They might make a show of it, but I can't see them stopping the C's.

Yeah, everyone hates it when the Spurs make the Finals. They always get the lowest ratings. Small market team with a heavy emphasis on team play and defense doesn't get everyone riled up...big shocker there. Ironically though, even though everyone thinks of them as being this old, plodding defensive team, they were actually one of the younger teams by average age (until they added S-Jax and Diaw during free agency). They've got a lot of great young players. They've also morphed into one of the highest scoring teams in the league, which nobody seems to have noticed. They're a lot like the run & gun Suns of a few years ago, now. Transition buckets, lots of passing and pick & roll play. Very fun to watch, but I doubt anyone cares to give 'em a second look. Ah well.

I actually don't think Durant is even the most exciting player on his team, myself (it's Westbrook), though it doesn't change your point. I think LAL - MIA would still garner the highest ratings, but OKC - MIA is a close second, followed by LAL - BOS, probably. And here I am, rooting for SAS - PHI/IND. Smiley: laugh

I think the Lakers hinge on whether or not Bynum and Gasol get going (doubly so on the defensive end). If they try to get through by going all-in with Kobe, they'll lose. They're a better team when they run through the post, and it'll help 'em slow the game down...if they do otherwise, they'll just get outrun by Durant/Westbrook. Tough sell, though...OKC seems like they're built specifically to deal with that...Ibaka, Perkins & Collison can bang w/ LA's bigs well enough, and OKC can just draw Bynum out with pick & rolls.

Yes. The NFL is about 30% white, the NBA is about 17% white.
Not to mention that the most prominent position in football, QB, is almost entirely white and the face of most franchises.

I realize the Spurs aren't exactly all old men, but when your 3 main stars are Duncan (old), Ginobli (looks old), and Parker (been around so long he seems old), you can't help but think of them as an old team. I'm not pulling against the Spurs. I actually like them as a team and I am a huge Duncan fan, huge enough to forgive him for going to Wake Forest instead of Duke.

I also agree that LAL-MIA would garner the best TV ratings, but I think OKC-MIA would be a more exciting series. In regards to Durant v Westbrook, I think they are both pretty exciting players, but I think Durant does more for Westbrook than vice versa and I also think Durant is more likely to take over a game and drop 50 or 60 on somebody. I could totally see Westbrook averaging a triple double for a series, though, or at least something like 25-12-7 (pts-asst-reb).

For LAL to win the West, I think they need Bynum and Gasol to wake up and start playing. Kobe and one other isn't going to be enough to beat the 3-headed monsters that are OKC and SA.

I think Indy is a year away from being a serious contender and I think Philly is a player away from being a serious contender.

I don't think you can count it as affirmative action when the minority is the majority hired because they are better skilled than the majority. It's not quite the opposite of affirmative action, but it's definitely not the same thing either. Smiley: tongue
