Obama comes out in support of gay marriage...Follow

That is nifty. So if we split up the west... Utah and Arizona can go with the rest of the NW, and Oregon and Washington can go with the rest of the SW, and we can all be happy when it comes to gay issues at least. Smiley: grin I would personally make it a condition though, that if Colorado got to join us they had to give up the ridiculous person-hood amendment shenanigans.

And who would have thunk that Arkansas would be the most liberal of the southern states when it comes to gay issues?

They elected Bill Clinton as governor twice, how could you not think they were?

I don't know, you just don't hear much about them in general. I suppose that should be a good indication that they aren't chock full of crazies like other southern states.

Odd choice of words seeing as, for the most part, Arkansas is the butt of every other Southerner's jokes. It's the unofficial incest capital of the world, although West Virginia is giving it a run for its money.

Every joke that doesn't have to do with our distain for dirty, smelly, hippie liberals, of course.

Well I haven't spent that much time in the South. I only lived in Oklahoma for 10 months, and then I came back to Oregon where it is sane and there's not psychotic religious billboards telling me I'm going to hell for not believing in Jesus.

I found it amusing that DSD moved from the NE to the SE and then had the balls to ***** about their intolerance. You knew beforehand what the Confederate states were all about, sweetie.

Thanks for the chart link Joph, very nice. I don't really know how to feel about Wisconsin anymore. I appreciate the fact that we have a progressive history and tend to not be very divided in general until Scooter decided to divide and conquer. We're ahead of the curve when it comes to gay rights in general. I'm still ashamed that we voted Johnson in over Feingold. Fitzgerald in the Senate scares the shit out of me (Thompson isn't much better and I'd prefer Baldwin).

Can anyone explain to me why Iowa and Illinois are isolated bastions of liberality in the "mid-west"? Are they secretly really north-east states?

Illinois has Chicago, can't really tell you why Iowa is liberal.

Respected Republican Pollster advises Pubbies to Reverse Course on Gay Issues
Quote:

“As people who promote personal responsibility, family values, commitment and stability, and emphasize freedom and limited government we have to recognize that freedom means freedom for everyone. This includes the freedom to decide how you live and to enter into relationships of your choosing, the freedom to live without excessive interference of the regulatory force of government.

Gay Rights is now a conservative issue! Heh.

I'm actually rather surprised how few gay rights Michigan has, what with having Detroit and all. I know Michigan has its issues, but I don't think conservative state when I think of Michigan. Or does this go along with the stereotype that black people hate the gays?

At least here in west Michigan, the people seem to be very strong on the religious topics. And anti gun control.

Indeed for Illinois. Most of Illinois on a congressional map is red but Chicago and the collar counties make up about 60% of the state's population. Plus college areas like Champaign and little urban areas like around Rockford or St Louis. Mainly Chicagoland though.

No idea about Iowa except that it's more liberal to the east and becomes more conservative the further west you go. So I'll credit the healing power of Illinois.

Nate Silver at 538 did an excellent description of the Illinois political geography before if you care enough to read it.

That's pretty odd.

Wait, nevermind. I just got up and I got myself confused. I only read anti-gun for some reason, didn't see the control lol.

I wouldn't say it's completely accurate, but it's pretty damn close. I would love it if we could secede from the US and join Canada. That'd be awesome.

Iowa is relatively liberal, barring a bastion of very strong R control, low unemployment (5.2%), and they overturned separate but equal on a state level ~80 years before it was done on a federal level. Really, they've just been quick to pick up socially liberal movements.

No, I like their way of doing things better. If we tried to conquer them, we'd more than likely ruin the good things they have going on up there. Smiley: tongue
