I know there's a forum for general game discussion, but I also know that a lot of people who frequent this forum are avid Game of Throne fans. So, would you play a Game of Thrones MMORPG? I am currently about halfway through the 2nd book and was thinking to myself how awesome of an MMO this series would make. I was trying to think of what classes you could make, thinking you would need at least 8 for some good diversity. Here is what I thought up so far.

Knight - melee DPS and tanks, wears heavy armor and uses a sword and shield
Sellsword - melee DPS, wears medium armor and either dual-wields or uses a two-handed weapon
Water Dancer - melee DPS and possibly an avoidance tank based off of Arya's "dancing teacher" uses a short sword and a dagger and wears light armor
Pyromancer - ranged DPS wears light armor and brews potions to use in battle like wildfire
Maesters - healers and possibly ranged DPS
Archers - ranged DPS
Ranger - beastmaster and melee DPS based off of Jon Snow wears medium armor and uses a single sword and no offhand
Maegi/Red Witch - healer and ranged DPS based off of the maegi who killed khal Drogo and the red woman that Stannis converts to

I only put the Water Dancer as an avoidance tank because I thought you would need more than one tank class. I added the maegi/red witch because I thought you would need a 2nd healing class.

So what do you guys think? Would you play an MMO based off of Game of Thrones? I haven't fleshed out a story or what factions there would be or how PVP would work, just the bare bones of classes.

Well, I would have to get through the whole series to see where the story is to see where an MMO could go with it. Unless you did something like LOTR: Battle for Middle Earth where the MMO story is taking place at the same time as the story in the books.

And of course it's going to be similar to any MMO. Find me an MMO that doesn't follow the 4 pillars of tank, healer, melee DPS, ranged DPS. I just think the story and the world offers a lot to someone to develop an MMO and I hope some company does it while I'm still playing MMOs.

I wouldn't play it, because I think it's flawed at conception. Intrigue and politicking are the primary dynamics of GoT, not the incidental combat. A GoT MMORPG would need to be built up around its dialogue system, and it'd have to be a damned good one. Like, Vanguard meets Bioware multiplied by 10. The other important thing would be a robust faction/guild system that's heavy on player freedoms and allows some underhandedness. Something like EVE, and maybe with just as much meta-game craziness.

Shoehorning in old combat systems would just be silly. Might as well just RP Game of Thrones in any old RPG.

It's something I might try on a free weekend or if it went free-to-play after a while, but I doubt I'd spend $60 + a subscription fee on it.

EVE Online? Does that count?

But yeah, that combo of classes is getting stale for me at least. Been there done that, would need to see something fresh gameplay wise to make me pay money at this point.

If they could actually make a game based off of politics and subterfuge (which some may argue is politics), it would be pretty cool, but I don't see it happening.

World of Tanks, Eve, Ace online. But it's not so much that you have tanks and healers, but more so that it's swords and sorcery like nearly every other MMO on the market.

I'm trying to think of a way to work the intrigue and backstabbing into the game since that is what the series is based on. Maybe once I have finished the series I will have a better idea of how to do this.

I just finished book four yesterday, and started book five. But from what I know, there are at least two more books to be released. His lag time between books is loooooooooooong, too. Well, except for books two and three.

I'm not sure what I am going to read after these - this series has been pretty epic.

If you haven't read Wheel of Time, it's pretty good too. And it's got something like 13 or 14 books with the prequel New Spring.

Wouldn't play it personally. Like an Elder Scrolls MMO, it's something that could, conceivably, be done as a single-player game... but an MMO would ruin it. One of the harshest parts of A Song of Fire and Ice is that when people die, they stay dead*... and depending on who it is, it creates huge power vacuums and affects entire kingdoms. You can't get that feeling just by killing a random other player; and you won't get it if the NPC you killed respawns in 5 minutes.

Also, they're making an ES MMO Smiley: disappointed

*Besides White Walkers and Catelyn Stark.

Be sure to make Rangers really awesome at first. Then after a year or so, release a patch that makes them a virtually useless class.

Guild Wars 2 doesn't have healers or tanks. Instead of a healing/damage/tank system, they are using a damage/support/control system, with each class having ample options in each area, and hybridization is heavily encouraged.

I can't see this working, unless you make it a MMO with a set life span, and your character can only choose which house to back as events move forward, out of your control. You could, for example, try to aid Arya as she escapes; but whether she makes it or not, you'll have to fight your way out and avoid those soldiers (and allies) forever after. If Arya dies, she's dead for everyone, for good. If she doesn't, well, who knows?

Maybe the game resets at a certain point, giving new players a chance to start on that server with some agency (and older players a chance for some vengeance and/or pvp in the army with which they are now aligned).

One of the biggest complaints in the MMOs I've played is that the actions players take don't really affect the world. Eve Online solved this problem one way. I don't think that model would work for GoT, but a cyclical reset might.

What if it was it was mainly a single player game so you could experience the story the way it should be where things don't reset 5 minutes later, but there was the option to do dungeons, raids, and PVP. I guess it wouldn't technically be an MMO then, but it might work.

Or the entire game could be phased so that when something changed for you it stayed changed. This would prevent higher level people from going back and helping lower level friends, but it would still accomplish that feeling of having an impact on the world. Of course, there could be areas that are inconsequential to the storyline that are completely unphased so characters can still interact.

I was also thinking there should not be any hard and fast factions. You would have the option to either stay completely neutral or to align yourself with a particular noble house. The noble houses would then be grouped into alliances and if you are aligned with a noble house, any character aligned with a noble house of another alliance would be fair game for world PVP. Any character who stayed neutral could not be attacked by a character with an alignment unless the neutral character attacked first. Neutral characters could also have the option to do mercenary missions for the different noble houses and would be considered to be aligned with that noble house but only for the duration of the mission.

GOT story wouldn't make for a good MMO, but the world would. I would say: set it during the Targeryan reign before GOT, but magic has hibernated the world during that era. I'd set it well after GOT/ASOIAF, or a thousand years before. Or do a slightly alternate universe so you can have all the contemporary feel of GOT, with magic thrown in. It's got a world of geography of all types, it's got obvious factions and alliances. Characters from Westeros could all have to be allied to one particular House. It's got some obvious racials, and factions, with the Tree dwelling First Men, the swamp people (Forget the Reeds' people's name), the Horse people, the Westeros humans, Targaryons, and the undead White Walkers just for starters. (I'm not so familiar with the Eastern continent races.) And whatever the heck Jaquen is. Also, you forgot there are Warlocks in Quarth.

It's got Dragons, and baby dragons. It's got Direwolves.

It's got a ton of costume styling for various areas already. It's got a ton of particular architecture stylings, both exterior and interior.

There's so many obvious factions to get reputation with and quest for, such as the 7 houses, The Night's Watch, The Dothraki, Quarth, all the rest of the areas of Essos and that other island/contintent I'm forgetting.

I'd definitely play the MMO. As long as the gameplay was good, the art couldn't help but be fantastic, with any competent animation. If you wanted the GOT storyline, It'd definitely have to be a single player RPG.

This is what I was talking about. I like the world the series is set in and think it would make for an excellent MMO world. The MMO doesn't necessarily have to follow the SOIAF story, just set it in Westeros and the Free Cities. Maybe it could even take place back when the first men were coming to Westeros.

I was going to make that exact comparison but I wasn't entirely sure how the multi-player coop worked in Diablo. But yes, something like that.

you could use it to replace the traditional choice spectrum. so instead of do you help the villagers or kill them, it would be are you sleeping with your sister, or just your cousin who you've never met. That kind of thing.

Work in a couple Oedipal options to make it more complex...
