Hanging out in the Asylum and OOT forums makes me feel like a kid again. I see all these people with post counts in the tens of thousands and I look at mine and it's only 1800. I think since I'm posting more often than I ever have, I'm going to start something fun and interesting when I ding 2k, because even if it's a drop in the bucket for some of you guys, it's a big deal to me!

In the spirit of the poll, I will say that as a female, I've done all that alone. Dinner, movie, theater, the ballet, opera. I've done it all alone. Have I gotten some questioning glances? Yes, but if you strike up a conversation during dinner or before curtain goes up with your neighbor, it's no big deal. If I don't want conversation, I'll bring a book with me to dinner.

I've even been known to tell the waitress that if there's some other solo diner that wants company, I'll be happy to share my table.

I've done both alone before, but prefer to have company. Following the stated conditions, I'm more adverse to dining alone than watching a movie alone. I can't imagine dining alone and getting a table in any sort of hosted eatery. I'd get a spot at the bar, or find someplace to eat where I'm not going to be occupying a table that a whole group might use. Honestly, it's more about being rude than about being self conscious about being alone. Obviously, this does not apply to diners, lunch rooms, etc. But the question was about seated/hosted tables, which those are generally not. I suppose something like Denny's late at night when it's not busy, I might take a table/booth, but then that's not really a mid level restaurant either. Even when I'm traveling, I'll usually just get takeout or room service rather than sitting down somewhere. Hotel bar/restaurant being the possible exception of course, but I'll usually try to sit at the bar if there is one in that situation as well.

As to movies? While I tend to prefer to go with friends, I will go see a film I'm really interested in alone if timing doesn't allow for a group of us to go. It seems like films go in and out of the theater a lot faster than they used to, so it's honestly tricky to schedule to see them sometimes. There's lots of films that come out and a couple friends will all be like "OH! Let's all go see that together!", but not this weekend, because of X, and the other person can't go the next weekend, because of Y, and by weekend 3, it's only showing in like 5 places, and if you don't get there on week 4 you're waiting for it to come out on DVD. So yeah, sometimes I'll realize that if I don't just drive to a theater and see it myself right now, today, this minute, while I've got a few hours of free time, I'm not going to see it in the theater at all, with or without other people.

Of course, I just realized that the tiny little theater that's right near where I live has been remodeled and it's this thing now. I knew they'd been redoing it (and all the other stuff in that mall area, making grocery shopping a pain sometimes *waves cane*), but hadn't actually tried going there since they finished. Someone was raving about this new super-luxury theater, and I'm like "that sounds cool, where is it?", only to realize it's like 3 blocks from my house. Hmmmm... So does it count as eating out by yourself if you go in there and order food? Do we need a separate category for this?

They have one of those around here but $17 for a ticket is a bit much. There's a couple places that have less fine Corinthian leather but still nice seating and serve food. Regular ticket prices and the food isn't any more expensive (and about the same quality) as Friday's or the like.

I have the opposite of that here. At what used to be the dirt mall, the cinema is still there showing second runs (about six months old) for $2 matinees. So I'll usually wait till my movie shows up there and try to hit it up on a weekday afternoon.

We have one of those as well. It's actually relatively nice since it was the "good" theater until recently when they built a new-new theater, moved the second runs into the old-new theater and knocked the old-old one down. The old-old one was rather dumpy.

I think I missed a golden opportunity -- second run movies with crappy dinners served at your seats! Choose between the Salisbury steak or the slab of pressed pork "rib meat". Free peas in your cobbler!

You were kind of beaten to the punch by the airline industry. Of course, while they get you to a different destination, your idea would allow one to simply walk out of the movie.

He could have his own version of air marshals that taze any moviegoers that start acting erratic or disturb the others. Not a bad, idea, actually.

I'd call them "ground air marshals".

I made a joke that movie theatre personell who remove unruly patrons with cattle prods should be called "chris browns". It was a play on the fact that people in theatres/concert halls that help you to your seat are called ushers. Usher is a well-known hip hop artist. Chris Brown is a well-known hip hop artist who is infamous for beating the crap out of his girlfriend Rihanna, another well-known hip hop artist. Hence the connection.

Edit: After having to explain the joke, I realize it had absolutely no chance at being funny at any point in the space-time continuum.

I could eat alone if I could sit at the bar, and watch a game on TV. I wouldn't want to be just sitting in a booth by myself. Otherwise I'd rather save the money and eat in. I go to restaurants for the communal experience more than the food. (Same with the movie, I'd skip it and Netflix something instead.)

I often do both, but there have been times when Elne was not feeling well I would not go out as I didn't want to go alone.
Since I volunteer usher I often see plays by myself. Taking Elne later if the show is good.

I eat alone on an almost daily basis. I have lunch by myself everyday at work and I love it. Gives me a chance to chill out in the middle I a work day and read my book for an hour. Right now I work in a hospital so going down to the cafeteria by myself isn't so weird, but at my last job I would go wherever I wanted for lunch by myself, and some paces were a little more upscale than TGI Fridays. I never sit at the bar because I like the room to lay my book down on the table. I try to tip well because I know a larger party could be using the table, and I don't want the waitress to feel they are getting shafted. My husband doesn't get off work until ten at night and sometimes, when I'm really craving something in particular, I'll stop at a restaurant for dinner by myself, too.

I have been to the movies by myself a few times. The first time was to get away from an overly annoying roommate. The other times were because I wanted to see a movie I knew my other half wasn't interested in and he was working or otherwise busy.

Having said that, I Ike the idea of a service that will match you up with other people to have lunch with because I personally have no idea how to find women to be friends with when I'm not working or in a class with them.

I wouldn't mind going by myself if I could be ***** to get off my bum and go.

Yeah this is me. I voted yes to both because if I wanted to see a movie I would go alone, but I haven't actually cared enough to go to a movie in ages. Would certainly go see live music or any other show alone if I wanted to see it as well. I like dining out alone, and do it fairly frequently. I bring a notebook to scribble in, a book to read or a portable gaming system and enjoy myself.

Dinner alone, but not movie alone OR with anyone. Migraines.

So I voted both alone, but that's assuming the movie is a DVD is on the TV at home.
