- Maine is the most peaceful state for the 11th consecutive year.
- Wyoming has improved the most while Arizona records the biggest fall.
- Cambridge, Mass., metro area is the most peaceful, Detroit the least peaceful.
- The U.S. is more peaceful than at any time in the last 20 years.
Guess where you'll find the least peace? Louisiana is the least peaceful. The South is the least peaceful region with the highest homicide, violent crime, and incarceration rates, as well as the highest prevalence of gun ownership, and the second highest police employee rate.

I have a serious problem with Louisiana being ranked the least peaceful, but of course I didn't click the link so I'm not sure what criteria they are using. I can say that other than New Orleans being the "per capita murder capital of the world", the rest of the state is relatively safe and a great place to live, especially if you like to eat.
I think it's disingenuous to use "availability of small arms" as a criteria. If the availability of small arms results in an increase in violence, then that increase in violence will be represented directly in the other data sets.

So in other words 2 things that marginally matter and 3 things that have no bearing whatsoever on how "peaceful" a place really is. Why am I not surprised that the Northeast was at the top of the list and the South was at the bottom?
Oh, and shouldn't incarceration rate make a place more peaceful? You know, if all those violent criminals are behind bars, they're not out disturbing the peace and whatnot, right?

Not sure if serious.
People are probably getting arrested at a higher rate in Camden than in Greenwich, CT, but that doesn't mean that Camden is safer.

Most of Maine's violent crimes fall easily into the domestic category. So, we're mostly only killing or maiming friends and family. That's kind of comforting as it should mean that the chance of being violently attacked by a stranger is pretty minimal.
