*gasp* RACISM! []Follow

Haven't you heard?

Well here's the gist of it:

Quote:
The complaint alleges that, in 16 seasons of "The Bachelor" and seven seasons of "The Bachelorette" (the eighth season is slated to begin airing in May), the defendants have never featured "a single person of color ... in the central role." The suit also alleges that the few people of color who have been chosen to compete are often eliminated after the first few rose ceremonies.

Basically everybody being featured in the main spot is white. Not only that but most of the contestants are white as well. Now add in some provocative quotes:

Quote:
"It's as if [the network] is afraid they could lose advertisers by showing interracial dating."

Quote:
"I think Ashley [Hebert] is 1/16th Cherokee Indian, but I cannot confirm. But that is my suspicion! We really tried, but sometimes we feel guilty of tokenism. Oh, we have to wedge African-American chicks in there! We always want to cast for ethnic diversity, it's just that for whatever reason, they don't come forward. I wish they would."

Quote:
"If the plaintiffs win and you see an African-American Bachelorette, would there be a stigma associated with her? She's only there because the lawsuit said she had to be there."

Quote:
"I'm surprised that someone like Fleiss didn't at least see the revenue potential of expanding the cast," GarcÃa said. "Why wouldn't you feature a successful African-American man or woman?" Not to mention the fact that "a meaningful multicultural dating show ... would more closely reflect modern interaction," he added.

... and you have yourself a controversy.

So anyway do you think the plaintiffs have a leg to stand on? Is there any point of showing interracial dating if no one wants to see it? Do we even care? Fears of the poor bachelor being put on the spot in a future season because he turned down the black chick? Does this still bother people in this day and age?

Choose one
This is blown way out of proportion.:14 (35.9%)
Legitimate gripe, sue 'em.:2 (5.1%)
Interracial stuff is icky either way.:1 (2.6%)
Why aren't there more fat chicks on the show?:22 (56.4%)
Total:39

This is one of those things I always watch with mild interest, hence my bringing it up in thread form I guess. I never caught more than a few episodes myself, and can't really consider myself a 'fan' of the series. As for the whole interracial dating thing, I'm about 13 years and two children past the point where that would be an issue for me, but often wonder how many people see it as something more unusual. Would the ratings dip if the bachelor was a black guy? What about Asian? I dunno, they're trying to sell a product I guess?

Thoughts? Smiley: flowers

I think I'd be ok with my race not participating in this show.

Edit - I voted for more fat chicks just for Lollygax. He likes them big-boned gurls.

Racial quotas are stupid and the people getting upset about this are stupid.

Besides, it's television and who gives a **** about television?

My 82 year old grandma loooooooooooves the Bachelor/ette. I'm sure ultimately either way won't ruin her life, but her delicate sensibilities probably prefer seeing the other European descendents compete (even though my uncle swears she is 1/2 Native American). Really, though, are African Americans really complaining that this really show isn't plucking the craziest of the marriage-crazy of their race and putting them behind a camera? Isn't that what Basketball Wives is for?

Lets face it people will complain no matter what you do. I say tell the person to shut up and watch something else if they don't like it. Haters gonna hate, etc...

On a side note I want to see some chubby women on those kind of shows. Smiley: drool

Its been scientifically proven that black chicks are ugly. Just ask Alma. No one wants to watch that.

Also, I voted that interracial stuff is icky. That's why I married Flea -- for the dirty, dirty wrong sex.

Not even black men. That's why the fat chick option has so many votes.

I voted fat chicks because it best encompassed the overwhelming feeling of inanity and profound disappointment with society I got when I opened this post. I need to eat a pizza. Smiley: frown

I kind of like that show...truly surreal to watch Ice T as an old geezer. He seems to spend half his day in a bathrobe and slippers, with a blanket over his lap, in front of the TV. I bet he has strong opinions about bingo.

I missed that entirely. What'd he get muted for?

Second'd the karma kamping, btw. Watch your back Joph.

The only TV racism I've seen lately that actually bothered me was a recent commercial for Golden Corral. If you're not in one of those markets or haven't seen it yet, it's an uppity while couple driving to dinner with their black friend couple riding in the back.

The white wife says out loud something to the effect of "You're going to LOVE this seafood restaurant we're going to, but it can be a tad pricey! And I hopfully we catch chef on a good night!" The black couple then looks at each other and bails out of the car at like 45mph and walks across the street to a Golden Corral.

I tried to find a copy of it online but apparently the original version (which contains some commentary from the black couple after they jump out, something to the effect of "this is more like it!") has been dutifully censored on youtube, so the best I could find was this:

I only vaguley followed what happened but I think he basically picked an argument with Kao over something he did that got a warning and Kao backed up his warning. I think it was something about triple posting.

IIRC, he accused Kao of profiling him, because he got yelled at for spamming. And then wouldn't drop it despite ample hints that he should.

I've seen the full version on TV many times. I don't find it racist...
