If you bought the same package off of Amazon as X and I, then you jsut need to patch the game and it'll give you those for free*.

Well alrighty then, I'll have to give that a try. I hadn't wanted to deal with the whole online thing after all the difficulties getting to game to run in the first place. Sounds like it's worth another shot.

You access Witch Hunt under "Other Content" or something like that from the main menu. It's a stand-alone sort of thing, not embedded in the main game like Return to Ostegar or Warden's Keep.

Xsarus linked to it on the other thread we had going, near the beginning of page 2 or 3. I'd go find it and repost it here, but that's typically something I get other people to do for me.

Speaking of online issues, DA2 doesn't seem to be able to detect my internet connection. Every time I go to the main menu it gives me an error about how I have to be connected to the internet to log in, and if I try to go log in, I get the same error. It's weird.

I don't care for the make over they gave the elves either. I suppose it's good that they look much more distinct from humans than they did in DAO, but now they just look, anorexic and freakish. Well, all except for Merrill and Fenris. And omg, is he hot. I have a thing for pretty, dark and brooding guys. =x

I've only seen one elf (or at least only paid attention to one) -- the poison vendor guy. He looked like the love child of the dork virgin elf in DA:O and Gizmo from Gremlins.

I like their makeover a lot, actually. It makes them distinct. I thought they looked way more anorexic before--they were just really skinny humans with pointy ears.

For DA:O there's just something about the elves. The face maybe, it's just not right. I can't put my finger on it, but after creating my 2nd elf I can't seem to make a face that I actually like. The angled and rigid jawbones perhaps? I dunno, just seems wrong.

I liked my DA:O elf except that the lighting in the creator isn't great and I wound up going with a more whorish looking eye shadow than I would have. Wasn't bad enough to make me reroll after trudging through the Circle game start though.

The elves in DAO were only slightly more skinny looking to me than the humans. That and as protein said, their faces are a bit more angular, but that's it. Frankly, I don't think my elf looks like an elf, aside from the ears. But I do think they went too far with making them look distinct in DA2. I just feel like they could have done something to make them look different but still normal I guess? I've read plenty of complaints about how the game overall feels like it was rushed though, so they probably just didn't give themselves time to really flesh out the elf design.

Kinda regretting my choice to make a mage in DA2... are they weak compared to the other classes? None of the magic really stands out and heal has a 40 second cooldown. Thinking I might stick with it, just for kicks; Primal a good tree to go in? And maybe Elemental? All I've heard so far is that Force is fantastic once you can choose a specialization; but spirit healer and blood mage are both lackluster.
#287 May 07 2012 at 4:45 PM Rating: Good
There's a mod to shorten the CD's on spells, because yeah, it's ridiculous. Primal is good, but elemental seems to be better. With your ice spells, you can brittle enemies, which then enables rogues and warriors to do a crazy amount of damage on them. Plus from what I've read, Firestorm is the biggest damage AoE in the game. Or at least for the mages. I don't think mages are weak, they just aren't as OP as they were in Origins. The OP class now is dual weapon rogues.

Mages are decent. I liked Primal a lot, and if you heal it spares you having to have Anders with you all the time.

The extra damage from the smacking stuff repeatedly with your staff makes up a bit for the lower damage from the spells. Considering how the story plays out, I think Mage is probably the best class to play as in DA2.

I think the story is much better as a Mage, personally.

That said, Mages definitely aren't the power houses they were in DA:O. But they aren't weaklings, either. They're just a LOT more about control.

Rogues give you amazing single target dps (particularly when talking about a DW Hawke). Wariors give solid close-range AoE DPS. Mages give great large-area AoE DPS, particularly when you have big groups. More importantly, they have a higher ability to control enemies and buff allies than the other classes.

Because Heal and potions both have a fairly long CD, you can't play DA2 the same way you could play DAO, falling back on them as a crutch. You need to be proactive with your defenses and avoid damage where possible. Mage is the best option for that control, and you really can't rely on an AI to provide it. If you're going to have to micromanage your Mage anyway, it might as well be Hawke. Particularly since he blows the other two Mages out of the water, having a much larger number of spell options.

You can still spec Hawke to be a stronger AoE damage dealer (with some somewhat powerful single target skills) but it will definitely require cross-class combos. He does have one of the better AoE CC combos, though.

I picked up Anders. For someone who was found dead at Vigil Keep with an arrow through his neck, he seemed remarkably spry.

It's just his neck. If it were his knee, he wouldn't be able to go on adventures.

Yeah, that's an awkward retcon. The devs confirmed that the characters remarkably survive, because they felt it allowed them to tell a better story overall. Was oddly refreshing to hear them openly admit to a retcon. If you demand continuity, just think Justice possessed that body as he was dying or something.

If it makes you feel better, he may have died in the epilogue because of a glitch. It's possible you were fully upgraded and the game didn't register it, which is one of the more annoying bugs with Awakening.

That doesn't really fit the narrative either but what can you do. I understand the comments about the game that it's not a bad game, it just doesn't hold up to the original. It's no one major thing, just a lot of little things that have me feeling more detached from my character, from the other NPCs and from the plot. I won't bore you with a laundry list of minor gripes but the cumulative effect is that the game may have been "better" under a different title that didn't invite comparisons, especially when it goes out of its way to drop in old characters.

So far the thing that has annoyed me most is all the damn side quests. Normally, it doesn't bother me but in the first act of the game it felt like I HAD to do all these side quests to get enough money to get on the Deep Roads expedition. And most of the side quests just haven't been that interesting so far. I hope the rest of the game isn't like that. I enjoy doing side quests, but I want to do them when I want to do them, and I don't want to feel like I have to do them, if that makes sense.

You don't have to at all. You'll end up with 50g quite quickly, which makes further quests unnecessary. And if you don't want to do them at all, you don't have to--as long as you complete the core line (which doesn't even include recruiting anyone but Anders and Merrill, if I remember correctly) you'll have the option to move on by accepting a loan.

No reason you have to do any side quests.

But if you don't do them before you go in the Deep Roads, are they there in Part 2? I was afraid that if I didn't do them, they would be gone and I'm a completionist, so I didn't want to run the risk of that happening. I ended up having 20g left over after I finished everything, aside from the loan quest which I didn't need.

No, the side quests only last for one act. But you don't HAVE to do them. Some might affect what's available later. In general, they don't. They're mostly there to flesh out Hawke's character, establish the situation of Kirkwall in that act, and build on his (or her) relationship with the companions.
