I have issues with that game. Specifically, it lends itself well to my "just one more fight before bed" mentality and has caused me to lose hours of sleep on numerous days.
I haven't established myself a holding yet (started as a chick so apparently I need to claw my way up) so I'm in a cycle of "chase bandits, loot, find a town to sell in, run an errand, hire on some dudes, find bandits..." It's sort of "Sid Meier's Pirates!"-esque in that way.
I need to rebuild my honor after raiding some towns as well (first game, didn't know I needed 'permission' to do so without taking a hit) so the one time I grabbed a castle, no one wanted to accept me as a vassal and I got rolled by invading armies. Or I could just start over but I'm stubborn that way.
Chicks build renown faster, so there's that benefit. And marriage is fairly simple for them too. And a noblewoman can get a wicked awesome starter horse. Get your renown up and work on a faction's leader's liking of you(I prefer the nords because their highest end troops steamroll castle defenses), then become a vassal. Capture a couple minor castles and ask for no rewards, then cap a city and ask for it. Cities are where the real funds are(my castles rarely do much more than just barely sustain their garrisons, but cities usually leave me 8000 left after garrison costs assuming the countryside is kept bandit free).
Build a dyeworks in Rivacheg(take salt to sell when you go there) when you can, build an ironworks in Curaw and then breweries most other places for steady income as you work on that..
Also, some of the cheapest mounted troops are Sword Sisters. Usually cost something like 10 less per week than other high end cavalry(though not as strong as heavy knights), are relatively strong for both regular fights and castle storming and ride some of the fastest mounts. Pain in the *** to recruit however(gotta rescue peasant women from bandits/armies).
