Rosen vs Romney: That's what she saidFollow

Rosen's comments may have been accurate, but they are ill-advised. That said, it seems a little outlandish to make such a big deal out of them, given what a small fry Rosen seems to be. This would be news if say, Hilary Clinton said this - but some backroom hack? Who cares? I am sure that the vast majority of Dems in the political machine are facepalming about this individual not keeping their mouth shut.

All I can say is, thank goodness it was a woman who stuck her foot in her mouth like this. If it were a man, oh, lawsy, the faux outrage!

Because men can actually understand the words coming out of their mouth.

Way to spoil some perfectly manufactured outrage. Speaking of I'll-advised, gloating in public is never a good idea.

You're perfectly correct in stating that this is really not a big deal, Republicans are blowing it out of proportion to score cheap points, and most mainstream Democrats are correctly distancing themselves from Rosen.

However, you have to recognize that the Democrats would do exactly the same thing were some low-rate right-wing female commentator (Meghan McCain, Ann Coulter, etc.) to make similar comments about a Democratic politician's spouse. It's just the nature of the beast, and we'll all forget about it in a week.

It'd be more akin to Karen Hanretty saying it. "Who's Karen Hanretty", you ask? Exactly.

What's lost in all of this is that the Romney boys are all grown up now. The youngest is my age.

What's stopping Anne from working now?

Or any person not receiving state assistance. Way to make it out like a 99% vs 1% thing though.

The fact that her husband is a multi-millionaire, I assume.

But there are plenty of wives of multi millionaires who still make themselves useful. It seems all Anne Romney does these days is exercise, ride horses, and cheer lead for her husband. She was once a board member of the New England MS society but doesn't seem actively involved today (even though she does still, of course, have MS.)

*researches a bit*

Oh, that's why. She was an active proponent of stem cell research for a while there. Can't have that come out during the Republican primary. Smiley: dubious

I tried the "stay at home and do nothing but be a good wife" shtick and I got bored out of my skull within a year.

The issue at hand isn't that Anne Romney isn't doing anything in the private economy right now. The issue is that Rosen implied that Anne Romney wasn't doing anything useful in her private household when her boys were young. A statement which many stay-at-home moms (and GOP talking heads) quickly took issue with.

I just don't understand why you have such an issue with the woman for choosing not to work or donate her time.

Why would you criticize her for her lifestyle choice? Fudge meeting your arbitrary expectations of her.

No, Rosen implied that Anne Romney had no understanding of the economic pressures faced by someone who has to simultaneously worry about their family responsibilities and income. Sure it's foolishly phrased, and I'm not especially keen on defending it, but she was noting the difference between raising five kids and raising five kids while working a full time job to provide for them.

Yeah, I don't see an issue either. I'm not working, but I'm looking (and have been for a while Smiley: mad ). But if a couple decides that one of them is going to stay home, I really don't care. That's between the two of them and no one else should worry about it.

I have total respect for SAHMs, but most of them I know are also heavily involved in their children's lives - running girl scout troops, organizing food banks, volunteering at their kid's schools, etc. And they will proudly trot out all the things their kids are involved with that they are also a part of, in detailed description, because they made the decision to stay at home for their kids: not for their own personal sake, but for the sake of the children - to sacrifice a second income in order to be a full time parent.

Ann Romney got the luxury of it not really being a sacrifice. But her kids are grown. I guess having a husband running for president means you never have a boring day...

Or, I guess that's the true definition of the "leisure class."

There are occasionally valid reasons for objecting to one's lifestyle choices. Envy is never one of them.
