Yeah yeah, game-specific forums, blah blah. I don't care about those scrubs.

So I started the free trial up to level 20 thingy a few weeks ago, and had enough fun doing it that I decided to subscribe. I'm on Faeblight, as that appears to be where Nadenue and a few others play. I'm currently running an DPS/healbot mage, although I'm considering playing a cleric on the side so I can add a tanking-capable toon into the mix as well (rogue tanking looks pretty keen, too).

Post or PM me your toon names so I can add you to my friends list and send you in-game tells begging for free stuff.

I saw that the early levels were free now. Actually started downloading it last night. Once I'm in game, I'll toss you one.

I made a 2H DPS warrior on Fae named Blasthardcheese; he's like 6 or 7 but I never really play.

I got into the teens before I found out it was 15/month after. I was lead to believe it was ftp after buying, I may have considered a smaller monthly fee. I really liked the class system but I found the rest of the game pretty generic.

Put your faith in Blast Hardcheese!

And the 2H dps is just a roleplay element. He's big, dumb, and likes to swing big swords.

I would assume he specified 2h DPS because the class he's playing has the option to dual-wield or use a single two-handed weapon.

I assume Gbaji is working with an EQ mindset where dual-wielding was much more effective for melee DPS than 2H except under some extreme or contrived conditions. Warriors, rangers, rogues, monks, etc all favored dual-wielding whereas knights were stuck with two-handed weapons or weapon/shield combos.

I have no clue how that paradigm holds up over other MMORPGs.

You'll have to excuse our WoW mindset: you have the right to do whatever you want, and complain if it's not viable.

It was the same in XI until they gave 2H an insane boost and then it wasn't a real sword unless you needed 2 hands.

I'm currently flailing about in terms of mmos, after XIV bombed I went back to XI, was loving the new direction, and then the devs came out with their "abyssea was a mistake" crap and decided that what the game needed was more alliance only fights with 0.1%-5% drop rates... ugh

I even tried WoW but (this is sort of hilarious) the leveling was too slow. And I really didn't dig the fact that it was pretty much solo-only, and the quests are just little text boxes.

Didn't like LotRO or Warhammer...

I am currently downloading Everquest II, and I am starting to wonder if I am just too old for MMOs or something.

Looking forward to Secret World, but afraid to expect too much of it.

In other words, maybe I'll even try out Rift.

With the way WoW changed forming groups for instances, I'm not sure how one could call it solo only.

I think he was referring to how a person can get to 85 without ever needing to get a group, let alone talk to another person.

Doubt it. I mean, you can solo in most games to level cap if you want to.

^Fact.

You just don't find group-oriented leveling experiences anymore, because all it really does is add way more aggravation than fun. Unless you were a Brd, Nin or Rdm in FFXI, you were going to wait forever for a group. That's time spent doing nothing, or extra time spent traveling. Yeah, there's a certain kind of fun in having a group of competent players and getting Exp chains because of how fast you are ripping apart lizzies. But bad groups? But is it worth the aggravation of not being able to do anything else while you wait, or being forced to suffer through a terrible group because it's better than nothing? No, it really isn't.

Most games now confine group content to three different areas--battlegrounds for PvP throughout the leveling process, leveling dungeons, and endgame. Some add more on top. TOR, for instance, has Heroic areas spread throughout each zone that require 1-3 more players to help. In RIFT, rifts open that cause invasions, and you will need to group together with others in the zone to beat it back.

But the general experience is solo.

While I can see how people would miss that chance to group with others and tackle something I can completely understand why companies are moving away from that model. To expand on what Idiggory said once the majority of people level through a zone trying to find groups for certain quests, especially if they happen to be in BC or LK expansions, was a royal pain. Most of the time you ended up skipping it or having a high level guild member help due to the lack of level appropriate people to join you.

Does the lack of needing a group to quest in the game world ruin the concept of MMO's? I honestly don't think so. You still interact with other players throughout the game. The only difference is you are not held back from doing quests if you happen to level after a lot of the players have. It is a necessary sacrifice in the evolution of MMO's I feel.

I rarely group. I don't have time. I go AFK about every 15 minutes. I think that would **** off any group, even a group of guildies or friends. I might try to get a guild group once a month or so, but that's about it.

Part of what I particularly liked about FFXI is that while there was a wait for a group if you weren't a prime job, the lack of cross-server grouping combined with a forced need to group actually seemed to help strengthen the server's community. You got to know the people on your server out of necessity. Apparently, a similar situation was present in WoW before their cross-server grouping was implemented. I didn't play that game until well after it was, and by that point, you really didn't need that community to do anything in the game. Part of the experience is that there aren't a whole lot of people leveling new characters in WoW, at least not many new players. So, you get a lot of people who are content to hang out in one of the main cities and spam BGs and LFD to level up, and don't even bother with any questing. The lower level questing areas are pretty sparsely populated, in my experience. This is not unique to WoW, however.

I enjoy the ability to do things solo in these games. I greatly enjoy SWTOR, and have played much of it solo. I just think that these games lack in the group and community experiences that some of the older games had when grouping was forced. I'm not sure you'll ever really see that kind of thing again, as it's not quite a viable market to target.
