Aren't crows pretty much standard for fictional scenes of disaster and death? Whenever I think of crows, I think of the opening scene to the original Diablo, which had a couple crows picking at a hanging corpse.

I had no idea what she was even talking about until you linked that and I remembered the crap that came up over that a while back. I still don't get the big deal over it.

Yeah, crows and ravens have been symbols of disaster for centuries. I don't even know where the racism thing comes into that.

Some claim that the peace symbol is a depiction of a crows talon.

I think that Alanis designed that song as a sort of meta-irony about using irony incorrectly. Like, she used irony wrong ironically, just to play a trick on rhetorical snobs everywhere.

Joke's on you guys.

You're just deflecting from the fact the doctor is an obvious Ruskie, ya commie.

Jim Crow laws.

It might be a bit oversensitive to accuse Santorum of being racist for using crows in an anti-Obama video, but like I said, it's probably more likely that he and/or the producers of said ad didn't even think about the racial context.

No gbaji, it's not trying to find racism in anything. If they had used a snake instead of crows it wouldn't be racist. Unless it was a black snake of course. Smiley: sly They could have used pretty much any other animal besides a crow (or a monkey/ape) and it wouldn't have been offensive.

There's also those three black birds from the Looney tunes cartoons that talked like the characters in A Gathering of Old Men. Granted, I think they were supposed to be magpies and not crows, but all those black birds look alike, amirite?

Let's put that one to rest: it is.

Worry not, though. I'm sure he'll say something proper racist in the next day and a half or so.

Just a bit oversensitive?

There *isn't* a racial context. Not if all they did was show images of crows flying. Only via the most tortuous route would you see black birds, think of the name "crows" (sure they weren't ravens?), then think "that's like Jim Crow", and then conclude there's a racial context. It's pretty darn absurd.

Okay fair enough. Ordinarily, it probably wouldn't have even occurred to me. But I've been reading "The Help," and also read a blog about how some people on Twitter are complaining that the character of Rue in Hunger Games ended up being black in the movie, and how it ruined it for them. So yeah, I've had race on the mind a lot the last few days.
