A bill working its way through the Utah legislature would allow schools to drop sex education from their curriculum, as well as forbid any discussion of homosexuality or contraception by teachers.

If the goal is to prevent teen sex, however, Utah lawmakers may be working against their own ends. Research released yesterday by the reproductive health research organization The Guttmacher Institute found that receiving sex education actually delays teen sex.

These people are idiots who don't realise abstinence only sex education doesn't work. Do you really think they'll understand that no sex education whatsoever will be just as detrimental?

Go spend a few months in Utah and you'll answer your own question, at least in regards to that state.

As far as the sex ed. thing, they're ignoring the fact that it's Utah and the whole Mormon aspect. They tend to prefer isolation in many cases and to handle things their way. Many of the subdivisions are built with the church and school in the middle of the subdivision, with essential shopping very close by. Outside influence, especially anything that goes against their teachings, is kept to a minimum.

Hang on, Gbaji hasn't read an article based on the conclusion paragraph yet to tell us the study actually says the opposite.

Just normal human patter recognition engine faults. Silly to be offended by the one that's obvious to you and not the rest, though. With a study subject this complex, you can basically game any outcome you'd like that supports your agenda. Most sex education studies focus on teen pregnancy, but when that's shown not to correlate the way you'd like, they move to onset of sexual activity. Delaying formal sex education correlates with lower rates of divorce. Who cares about that, though, that doesn't support what I want. Enough studies with enough variables provide enough information for anyone to glom on to one aspect as supporting their case.

Give me a call when you find a study that changes your mind about something. Posting articles that support your view pointless. This is as useful as Gbaji linking to a Newsmax piece.

Are you surprised? I don't think they've introduced black people into Utah yet.

I'm not so sure that Utah's lawmakers are thinking of the goal. It seems they just don't want teachers teaching or talking about sex to the students.

I feel like this is the modern definition of 'conservative'.

My grandpappy didn't have no god-dam sex education and he lived to be 97!!!

As a Mormon currently living in Utah, I am thoroughly disgusted by this bill. I believe that comprehensive sex education is key to preventing teen pregnancies and STDs. Of course, I grew up in Los Angeles, so I am much moire liberal-minded than other people of Utah.

As far as the Utah culture is concerned, sex is evil. At least that is the impression I get from the Mormons who were born and raised here. It's like they believe that even talking about sex, is an abomination to the Lord. I read Utah parents saying, "No school is going to teach MY children about sex. I'm going to teach them about sex." The problem is, they never do. Case in point: My husband. His parents never talked about sex and what little education he received from school, didn't even cover how to put a condom on. I had to teach him how to do that.

We already decided to be open about sex with our children. Our motto is, "If they are old enough to ask, they are old enough for scientific answers." My three-year-old already knows the difference between boys and girls. I hope, that by teaching her when she's ready, she will never be afraid or embarrassed to ask me questions.

In addition to this bill, the governor has already stated that he will ignore all Facebook, online petitions, and social media sites calling for him to veto this bill. He has more or less stated that only the people who call or write a letter will be heard from.

/sigh

I just wish there was a separation between church and state here.

While I strongly disagree with the ideals behind the bill and think it's ridiculous, I do support the right of a state to enact such legislation if the majority of the population wants it. What I can't fathom is a politician in today's world that would obstinately exclude several channels of communication. Whatever the reason, he should be voted out of office at the nearest opportunity.

It's the same reason that (smart) Pols and poli strats weight letters multiple times the value of emails, and evaluate calls multiple times the value of social media postings.

I would disregard social media as well when dealing with local politics. Too easy to stuff the ballot.

The only thing online petitions are good for is displaying how many people you can supposedly get to sign your online petition.

In other words, the governor of Utah doesn't care about some French dude clicking a "Sign This!" link because he saw a Facebook status somewhere.

Congressional member websites are similar. They ask for your address and, while some let you send a missive without being in their state/district, others won't and all say they'll only respond to people they directly represent.

Pretty much this. Same thing I tell conservatives when they get all pissy about Romneycare in Mass. The same states rights that allows Massachusetts to pass one form of health care law, allows Utah to pass something else. The point being that when it's done at the state level, you have more say in it if you live in the state, and if you don't, it doesn't affect you. It's the whole reason for allowing (and even encouraging) this sort of thing at the state instead of national level.

/shrug. Perhaps he knows the constituents in his state better than you or I do? If he is voted out of office for this, then he was wrong about what the citizens of his state wanted. If he isn't, then he was right and our opinions really don't matter.

Here is an update:

Quote:
SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Gov. Gary Herbert late Friday vetoed the controversial sex education bill, turning back the legislative effort to eliminate classroom discussion tied to contraceptives, intercourse and homosexuality.

"Existing law respects the ability of Utah parents to choose if and how their student will receive classroom instruction on these topics," Herbert said in a prepared statement. "I am unwilling to conclude that the State knows better than Utah's parents as to what is best for their children."
