Former Maine Governor Angus King (I) announced yesterday that he'll be running for the US Senate. Other's that may also throw in their hat; John Baldacci (D) former governor of Maine, Chellie Pingree (D) current US Rep, Maine AG William Schnieder (R), Charlie Summers (R) Secretary of State, and Bruce Poliquin (R) State Treasurer.
None of the republicans have the stature that the dems/independents have. Angus could be a spoiler as he's really a pretty liberal guy. Our recent gubernatorial election results are a clear example of how a left-leaning independent can put the underdog in the winners circle with only 38% of the vote.
None-the-less, Angus is extremely well-respected and well-loved in these parts. Probably even more-so than Olympia.
My predication is that Angus King the Independent will be the next senator from Maine.

I won't pretend to know squat about Maine politics but everything I've seen has him as a real contender, not just a spoiler. I guess the big question is how would he caucus.

That's a nice soundbite answer I suppose but not caucusing means no committee assignments which means your influence as a senator is greatly diminished. He's going to need to choose one or the other if he's going to be effective.

While I think the guy can win the election hands-down, I'm not sure how effective he will be in the Senate. However, the thing I learned about Angus from governing here for 8-years is he's very adaptable and a bit cunning.
Also, like I mentioned he's pretty liberal, so ultimately I see him rolling onto the left side of the senate aisle. How much, more-or-less, he's willing to accept that, is likely to be, more-or-less, how effective he is at senatoring.

Yeah, I haven't played it but the folks there seem to be enjoying it. Seems to be a more "on rails" open world game than Skyrim; lots of side quests but less of a "what do I do now?" feeling.

Early polling indicates that much of King's support comes from Democrats and Independents and that 51% want him to caucus with the Dems vs 25% with the GOP. Not that it forces him to do anything but it may sway him in that direction.
