This.

I had my gallbladder out at 13, which is a very minor operation, but I found all the advice that most gave me was overhyped. It was quick and mostly painless, and the overly-cautious questions were there all the same.

Absolutely. My childhood is what happens when two people from the big city move to the middle of nowhere to raise a family and have a farm. Oh man, the stories.

Haha - great reference!

All our animals were free-range and mostly mingled with all the other animals (except cases where it was clearly dangerous). Once in a while you got one critter that just didn't play nice with the others. This particular goat, a pygmy goat no less (small goat complex?), kept thinking he was king of the barn yard and butting, well, everything. Mr. Boar wasn't having any of it, clearly.

The other king-of-the-yard was this rooster that was annoying, but hilarious. He would loop around and attack from behind, likes most aggressive roosters. But this guy took it a step further. When you ran into the barn to hide (as most kids would do when confronted by a lunatic rooster), he would run to the door and peer in with this beady little eye. If he couldn't spot you, he was smart enough to know there was a back door too and run around the barn and look in the cracks back there. He would then stalk around the barn waiting for you to come out.

Sorry - totally just hijacked the thread. But, so, the goat never had anesthesia, so yeah... back on topic now?

I haven't used this one in awhile:

Having surgery can be a confusing experience, Elinda, so I'll offer you some sage advice.

When you wake up from your drug-induced slumber, it's normal for your pants to be undone. I know, seems weird, but they do this to relieve the pressure that builds up in your lower amdomen due to the drugs.

Also, you may have a whiteish crusty residue all your around your mouth. They do this topical protein treatment during these operations to ensure a speedy recovery. It's really quite something.

Oh, and your surgeon will inevitabley have a huge ***** when you wake up. This is just because he really digs his job.

It is common practice to ask about wills, advance directives etc. Not that it makes it easier to answer. For my last outpatient surgery they didn't even ask, for tomorrow they did. Elne is now printing out a copy so I can take one with me.

Jophiel, I am sure you know the sacrament has been called ANNOITING OF THE SICK for a long time now. I had it done in 08 when having the first surgery on my leg as well as the one time I had the skin cancer removed.

As Elne said I'm scheduled for 0730 surgery, so lets see who wakes up first and LAST.

But really one second you are breathing oxygen and the next someone is leaning over you saying everything went well. Then they offer you a wipe to remove the protein treatment.

I've only had surgery once--it was major, but it was also very quick (for me); I didn't have any time to stress over it after finding out I was going to have it. Went to the emergency room around 1, was admitted around 4, surgery began at 10-11 I think. Was out for like 6 hours.

Anesthesia is really crazy though. I remember thinking my anesthesiologist was hot. I remember being asked to say the alphabet. I don't remember ever actually doing it, I was out so fast. At most I got to B, lol.

I really wouldn't worry about it. I'm lucky that I never had time to stress out (and, in any case, intense pain is a pretty good motivator for accepting surgery). I'm sure you'll be fine. Smiley: smile

If you do die, though, can you haunt Alma and gbaji? I'm sure it'd be hilarious for us.

My wife just had surgery last week to have a tumor removed from her mandible. They will ask you if you get car sick or other motion sicknesses, and if you do they'll give you a patch to combat the nausea you might feel when you wake up (at least this is what they did at the hospital last week). Depending on what you're having done, the recovery could be worse than being put under, my wife's face was really swollen for a few days after and she still doesn't have much feeling in her lip on that side because the tumor was growing around the nerve there.

I was put under once to have my maniscus removed when I was in Jr. High, I don't recall it being a big deal.

I've been under general anesthesia twice, the first time was for wisdom teeth and the second one was for my appendix. The first time, I had a panic attack, mostly because of the needle. The second time, I already had an IV in my for some good drugs, so the insertion of the IV wasn't near as bad because as an adult I knew that the reward was pretty immediate. Therefore, I was already pretty doped by the time surgery came around, and I remember going into prep, and waking up afterward to the nurses talking about Casey Anthony. Mostly I remember feeling sorry and being more worried about my poor husband panicking in the waiting room.

And just for another story to calm your nerves, my mother just went under general anesthesia last week. She doesn't remember anything, but apparently they didn't get her IV in properly, and she didn't get a full dose. She was still conscious, and began fighting with the doctors as they tried to correct her IV. Now, my mom can be a mean *****, and isn't a small woman. I've spent a good majority of my life successfully avoiding physical confrontations with her. My grandma said when the anesthesiologist emerged from the room, she looked like she'd been in a real brawl. But don't worry, my mother doesn't remember a thing. Smiley: lol

The actual bit with the oil is anointing of the sick. Last Rites refers to the package deal of reconciliation, final Eucharist and the anointing.

Anyway, "Last Rites" sounds better when cracking a joke.

I'm going to have to ask someone for use of their smartphone or laptop if you want to hear back from either of us by tomorrow night. I'll be staying overnight with Jonwin at the hospital until Sunday.

I prefer not to be put under. For my wisdom teeth and other dental work I just request the gas. Lots and lots of gas.

I've only had gas once....for some orthodontic work, I think. IIRC, it felt very, very similar to being drunk.

I had gas for my wisdom teeth as well. It was interesting.
As for the stay, 3 days stay for joint replacement at a minimum. When I had the leg repaired it was stretched to 4 as PT was not happy with how I was moving around on my crutches.

Mercy Hospital Baltimore, has a new building that houses its Joint recovery floor (and the OR's) they do not allow outside electronics, (maybe worried about infection) but they do have TV, so maybe will have wifi.

Either I have an inordinately high tolerance for pain or you guys that got gassed for your wisdom teeth are a bunch of pansies. I had a bit of Novocaine before and 500MG Acetaminophen after and I barely felt a thing. One of them was impacted and had to drilled and chipped out the hard way, but the rest just popped right out. They tried giving me Vicodin afterwards, but I told them to keep it. I hate what Hydrocodone does to me.

I was put under once as a child when I fell from a rope swing and broke and dislocated both the bones in my right forearm. Now that hurt. I had to have surgery to put the bones back in place before they could heal. I think I made it about four numbers before I was out cold. I woke up with a needle in my left arm that just felt weird when they pulled it out, and a huge cast on my right arm. I spent the whole time it was on thinking I'd have a badass scar, but it only left a tiny mark on my wrist that you wouldn't even notice if you weren't looking for it.

My rear lower set came in directly underneith the part of the jaw bone that goes up to attach to the upper part of the jaw (the coronoid process maybe? )

So basically they had to remove enough of the bone so they could get to the tooth, remove the tooth, then I think they put the bone fragment back in and let it heal. On both sides.

It sucked. Badly.

I had some weird mix of Valium and gas for my wisdom teeth. Apparently I was having a great time in the dark little room where they stashed me until I woke up... laughing my *** off, so they say.

Then I got combative with a state trooper who pulled my mom over for speeding. Luckily I had a mouth full of gauze so he couldn't understand a word.

Then I slept for 18 hours or so.

Everyone's different. Mine were pulled out separately, as he was freezing my mouth for cavities in different areas. Took all of 2-3 minutes to pull each tooth. My cheeks didn't puff out either. Was back to work the day of each time.
