I'm having surgery tomorrow. It's a pretty small deal but I've never had surgery before. I've never had general anesthesia and I've never had anyone ask me if my will was prepared or if there was a church that should be notified.

Up until today I really thought nothing of this little procedure, but now - today, I'm jittery nervous. Smiley: eek I wasn't expecting that.

I hope there are some new and interesting posts in forum=4 tomorrow night when I come back to life and am druggedly looking for distractions.

From what I understand, anesthesia is very fickle and some people just experience a completely unanticipated reaction to it (i.e. simply can't be woken up after the procedure). I don't know how common this is, but given that they ask if you're prepared before the procedure, I'd guess it's common enough (maybe 1-2%)?

Advice: Don't go into the light.

I may not wake up, but I'll be back.

I wouldn't sweat the anesthesia. I gather that the common experience with it isn't anything to worry about. Maybe some nausea, but all things considered, that's really nothing much.

Hey, just a few centuries ago, we'd be chopping the offending body part off of you, plus an extra 10 inches or so just to be safe, and you'd have to content yourself with some whiskey and a piece of wood to bite on! Smiley: smile

I was asked if I wanted to put to put a religion down on my form when doing a ***** analysis. I asked what they thought was going to happen in there that I'd potentially need Last Rites.

Sometimes it's hard to tell when someone is coming or going.

I've had surgery twice where I went under: sinus and wisdom teeth. Both went really well and don't recall waking up, as much as you just suddenly realize you are awake again. After going out for my wisdom teeth, I recall "waking up" sitting upright on a medical bed swinging my legs back and forth as they dangled over the edge of the bed in another room. Who knows what I did prior to that because I don't recall getting to the room or getting up on the bed. Smiley: lol

Yeah, I've been under a few times and it was noneventful. The most amusing part (to me) is when they ask you to count back from ten. My mind is always thinking "Pfftt.. whatever" and by the time I reach seven I'm waking up in some strange room with my pants missing.

Ahaha, yeah. I've had that happen. That was one weird teeth cleaning.

I just had Novocaine for wisdom teeth removal. It really wasn't enough. It was more painful and discomforting than having babies.

They took your pants to clean your teeth?

Only thing I learn to worry about when going under, is them insisting you can blow hard enough to get the ball to stay up in the air before you can go home.

No one ever told me that their are breathing exercises you can do before surgery to make this easier. Jonwin was given a whole set of exercises to do before his surgery tomorrow. We have to be up by 4am and be there at 5:30, for surgery is at 7:30. Thankfully they have a very nice waiting room with free coffee.

He only seem nervous that they would postpone the surgery due to paperwork snafu that they caused Monday. Since they called to tell us what time to be there and when the surgery is schedule, everything looks good. I just need to pack some clothes for the weekend, as I'm not about to face traveling by bus to and from the hospital for his PT sessions they want me to attend as his coach. I also don't want to miss the luncheon on Saturday they are having for the patients and coaches.

I've been under twice, once when they removed the lymph nodes from my neck they thought might have been cancer but weren't, and once for wisdom teeth. I made it back both times. the most annoying part for me was throwing up after the lymph node surgery because apperently the pre anesthetic stuff they had you drink back then caused whatever you ate next to come back up express.

Other than that, its just like goeing to sleep. If something were to happen, you wouldn't ever know it, so why worry about it?

Teeth cleaning with release? I always wondered about those dual dentist office/massage parlors.

Yikes! They had to hack and slash at my mouth to get mine out so it was pretty involved.

The sinus surgery itself was easy; the part where they pulled the sinus packing material out through my nose wasn't so easy. You know the clown trick where the clown pulls a never ending scarf out of his sleeve? Imagine that, but with my nose, not a sleeve. You know it's going to be bad when the doc starts with "I'm not going to lie; this is going to hurt." Smiley: lol

I've had many operations in my short but eventful life. I think in 24 years I've been under general anaesthesia a total of 35 (maybe 36) times. Give or take.

Most have been for major orthopaedic surgery, and I've always woken up. Honestly it's nothing to worry about. You'll probably be sick when you wake up, and groggy for a while. Aside from that, there's not much to worry about!

It can be quite daunting putting your life in someone else's hands, but anaesthesiologists are usually really good at placating you before you go under.

tl;dr don't panic!

Thirty-five surgery's and you still can't grow a mustache?

Yeah, there was hacking and slashing involved. I remember quite clearly when the dentist made that first cut of my gum. That didn't hurt as the novocaine actually numbed that area, but I could feel the skin separated and the warm blood gush out into my mouth.

The pulling and yanking and yanking and pulling was the sucky part though. It seemed like the roots of my wisdom teeth went all the down my neck and shoulders and into my arms - places the novocaine never came close to placating.

I was 18 and under-the-gun to get the work done before I fell off my parents insurance. My dentist was really mean but had come highly recommended a few years prior. I'm pretty sure he got much enjoyment from giving pain to snotty little teen girls. I still have two perfect gold fillings, though, that he put in my mouth over thirty years ago.

I grew a moustache, it's no my fault I'm not Sam Elliott. Smiley: glare

It's ok, Patrick Swayze couldn't grow much of a stash either.

I've never woken up nauseous or dizzy. Maybe a little groggy, but that wears off in a few minutes, like waking up in the morning.

Gah!! GOOD LORD! That bold part made my legs feel numb. I grew up on a farm and had my fair share of disgusting and upsetting sights (kitten getting stepped on by a cow? Boar disemboweling a harassing goat with a tusk [goat had it coming]?) but I've got a weak spot for knives/cutting.

The goat was spreading pro-Snowball propaganda and undermining the boar's power base, no doubt. He probably destroyed the windmill, too.

Your farm sounds fucked up.
