Basically some scientists were able to extrapolate the sound of a particularily well preserved jurrasic era cricket, by known the approximate mineral composition of the long dead one, the structure, and making use of what we know about close modern ancestors. Were you standing in a forest jungle somewhere on pangea or whatever the supercontinant was called back then, you might very well have heared exactly this sound.

I dunno about you, but this science **** is neat!

The high pitch is pretty. sort of in the range of a bell bird. But I bet people who get annoyed by cricket, frog and cicada calls are glad they're gone. The high repetitive call may have driven them nuts!

Except if it were baby photos, it would be like looking at before and afters of Michael Jackson. Only instead of turning into a white guy, he changes into a chick!

If it's any consolation it may have come from the era of denser air when flying insects were all HOLY **** 3 FOOT LONG.

That's pretty cool. I wonder how it sounds in comparison with today's crickets?

Easy enough to compare, surely? Do you not have crickets in Maine?

We have lots of crickets in Maine. When one gets stuck in the garage it's annoying as all hell.

Our crickets are small, but make a really loud rather piercing noise on mid-summer nights when they all get together. I was kind of wondering if ancient crickets were bigger and/or louder and/or more numerous.

...trying to imagine the din of multitudes of giant-sized crickets.

As loud as our "regular" ones are, I shudder to think. How anything got any sleep back then, between the noise and the constant predation, is beyond me.

This thread reminded of these recordings. I posted this years ago, but it's pretty cool stuff - worth a repost.

A new (new ten years ago) technology provided the capability to record the nanoscopic sounds from yeast cells as they're being 'stressed'. The final recording is a yeast cell essentially getting killed. The recordings are in Real Audio.

That ancient cricket sounds like an Alert sound from Windows 95.
