I heard a bit on the radio on my way home. Strong rhetoric aimed at Republicans stymying reform. A defense of tax reform, and an assertion that it's "common sense", not "class warfare".
Pretty standard stuff, from the 10 min. or so that I picked up. Seemed like he was orating well, per usual.

I heard nothing terribly jaw-dropping or earth-shattering. Over-all it was a pretty tame speech. Apparently Biden has developed some trick to keep his eyes open, so the camera seemed to change it's target to Hillary to catch her nodding off. She was pretty close a couple times. There must be some kind of android app that alerts them to 'look alive' when necessary.
I think Obama said about what was expected concerning the economy. Taxing the rich more taxing domestic employers less sounds peachy.....
I was a bit disappointed that Obama put so much emphasis on natural gas. I liked that he seemed to attempt to make some sort of sense out of our actions in the middle east, though I think there was far too much optimism concerning his comments about Afghanistan.
He seemed to almost snub the tea-partiers conviction with taunts of financial help to contracting businesses and homeowners. He essentially dismissed their claims of big and growing government while still assuring others that red-tape would be dealt with.
30% tax rate for millionaires and the tough talk about equity certainly scores with the OWS crowd. It would be interesting to see him stay in office and actually attempt to make it happen.

I love your president. He is the smartest, most down to earth political leader I have ever seen. He looks at a problem and says "what's all the fuss about, just do this, it's simple" real solutions to what would be simple problems if politicians could pull their heads out of their asses so they could see.
That being said. That whole speech was an hour and 15 minute campaign ad. I agreed with all of it (as much as a non-American can) but it pretty obvious what it was all about.

Well, not much sense is laying out an agenda you expect the GOP to help with. They have a vested interest in making sure the US is as run-down as possible in 2012*. Might as well run with the bully pulpit approach.

I did find it funny that as soon as this graphic started making its rounds online, conservative blogs started up with "Well, that's not really what the job numbers are! Using our own arbitrary rates, the unemployment is like 11.4%!"

I didn't even know it was on, but probably wouldn't have watched it anyway. I usually like reviewing clips afterwards, and if some motivated fella was to edit the speech to take out all the applause breaks, I'd be more inclined to watch. Those kill me, seems like they do it about every time he has to take a breath. Too many interruptions.

Nah, that's reasonable. The applause breaks are obnoxious. They don't even applaud when he makes a particularly salient point (I suppose because there's no apparent benefit to weighing in on stuff that isn't necessarily safe). He'd make a nice remark about something contentious or forward-thinking, and they'd sit in dumb silence. Then he'd follow it up with something along the lines of "...Because that's what America values: hard work!" and everyone falls over themselves to applaud.
I was a little surprised that he didn't explicitly mention Rep. Giffords or Senator Kirk last night. I'm sure he has reached out to both privately but expected to hear something in the SotU if only in the opening remarks.
