Obama to place US citizens in gitmo without trialFollow

Barack Obama has abandoned a commitment to veto a new security law that allows the military to indefinitely detain without trial American terrorism suspects arrested on US soil who could then be shipped to Guantánamo Bay.

Human rights groups accused the president of deserting his principles and disregarding the long-established principle that the military is not used in domestic policing. The legislation has also been strongly criticised by libertarians on the right angered at the stripping of individual rights for the duration of "a war that appears to have no end".

If I thought he would actually be using this to defend the US against radical muslims I might be encouraged. As it stands he's far more likely to us it to scare GOP supporters whose e-mail addresses he recently acquired.

Given that it was the GOP who added the provision, you must assume they're all retarded.

I can get behind that.

Plus, Bush did it first.

Unite what? I'm guessing you were just completely unaware that these provisions were added by the GOP and now you're embarrassed. It's okay... I know Drudge didn't spoonfeed you everything and left you feeling confused with only part of the story.

I mean, the fact that Obama was threatening to veto the bill over those provisions should have been your first clue where the originated from but I guess being a spoonfed conservative doesn't lend itself to critical thinking.

What I find funny is that the current Republican dominated house always complains about executive overreach, and then writes a bill that puts into law some serious executive overreach.

The original bill didn't, really. The parts about it needing presidential approval were added to get Obama to drop his veto. In the original version, they wouldn't have needed presidential approval to seize suspected terrorists (who would never have had their right to due process met), and would have mandated that they be kept in military prison.

The sections about detainment were passed by the Senate and are actually a narrowing of broader House provisions which said the US could use military force against those people.

Anywho, ******** about Obama not pressing for an even weaker bill is legitimate. ******** about the provisions as though they were Obama's idea is just asinine.
