Arguably, if he had said "I betcha a million dollars..." he could wave it off as a turn of a phrase. In fact, Romney tried to make that argument himself (which begs the obvious: Why didn't you?). Instead, he said "ten thousand dollars" and stood there with a stupid grin waiting for Perry to accept. Only a tool would believe that he wasn't completely serious about making the wager.
The bits about "Ohhhh.. the
pundits!" is funny because it's establishment Republicans who are trashing Romney for this and starting to peel off from him (not just over this). Romney was supposed to be the establishment candidate; the guy that the GOP machine could get behind and support. To cry about Fox News or Giuliani or Glen Beck or whoever giving Romney sh
it for this is to admit that his foundation of support is collapsing. It's not as though Romney has some big grassroots coalition going for him.
