Friendly-fire is one thing.. but attacking two separate bases at the same time seems a little.. nuts? What is particularly disconcerting to me is how this seems to be viewed (at least in the hysterical media) as an official NATO ATTACK on PAKISTAN..(oh ; also the Pakistan leadership ALSO view it like that "Pakistan's Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani said the killings were "an attack on Pakistan's sovereignty."

Oopsie! So do you think this is just another random incident that will be forgotten in a week and the same ole' song and dance will just go on? What are we still doing there anyway?

Well, I can safely assume a large majority of the population of Winnipeg can't drive, I witness this daily just driving around Fargo for work. But, I think I could forego the utter lack of driving ability.

The story I'd heard was that the Pakis at one of the outposts was firing small arms at NATO choppers, which precipitated the attack. It all seems rather fishy. Of course I don't feel we need to treat Pakistan all that kindly, considering they were harboring bin Laden anyways.

Given the Osama raid occured with helicopters, I'm pretty sure the pakistani border guards were ordered to shoot warning shots at any U.S. helicopters that approached the border without notice. Helicopters saw shooting, didn't wait to see if it was a warning shot, and obliterated them. I'd be suprised if there were any bullet holes in the helicopters, i'd also be suprised if the pakistanis didn't shoot first in this instance.

Is there an actual reason to assume this to be the case? I mean, whether you like the US flying choppers into your country or not, shooting at their helicopters is probably not a good solution.

You'd think when your weapons go "ping ping ping" and the person you're aiming at's weapons go "boom boom boom," you'd have the sense to not test to see which would do the most damage.

No and yes. It won't be "forgotten" but Pakistan needs US money/assistance too much to let something like this end it. Both to fight the "bad" terrorists (as opposed to the terrorists Pakistan supports) and as a hedge against interference from India.

According to a couple sources, the air base the US is "closed" from using is one the US hasn't used since the summer.

Now that begs the question; where was this patrol?

I think it's time to pull out of Afghanistan and Pakistan and let them duke it out. Maybe go blow a few kisses to India just to put on the pressure.

Dunno. The check points were on/near the border though since their function was to stop Afghan terrorist fighters from moving into Pakistan.
