Smart kids more likely to use drugs later in lifeFollow

#1 Nov 15 2011 at 11:20 AM Rating: Good
In the 1970 cohort study, a correllation was found between high IQ children and recreational drug used as adults.

Medical News Today wrote:
According to a study published online in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, a high IQ in childhood could be associated to illegal drug use later in life, especially among women. The researchers findings were based on data from just under 8,000 individuals in the 1970 British Cohort Study, a large ongoing population based investigation, which examines educational attainment, lifetime drug use as well as socioeconomic factors.

Researchers used a validated scale in order to measure the IQ scores of participants at the ages of 5 and ten years. In addition they collected information on participants self reported levels of drug use and psychological distress at the age of 16 and again at the age of 30 (drug use only).

Drug use included cocaine, cannabis, LSD (acid), heroin, downers (tanks, blues, barbiturates), and uppers (speed and wiz).

The commenters bring up some interesting points: Intelligent folks are more likely to question the validity of the drug laws in the first place, as well as feel the need to "shut off" in today's busy society.

As well as the boredom caused by nanny-state regulations and the super-consumer environment that pushes materialistic ideologies on people instead of active, engaging lifestyles.

My preferred "drug" these days is the supplement soy lecithin, used as an off the shelf alternative to Ritalin and other ADHD drugs. I call them chill pills. Three of them in the morning gets me through work without any anxiety or panic issues no matter what chaos floats around me. The purified phosphocetylcoline stuff works even better, but is like $30 a bottle compared to the $7 for the unpurified soy sludge.

Nothing quite like feeling totally centered and calm to get work done. And its legal. Smiley: nod

Better yet, tell me the time, date, year, and your name and jersey number and I'll find it myself and save you the shipping fees.

I know English is hard for you, but I did request the date and your name and jersey number for verification. If you're too afraid to give people proof of your lying then just say so.

Quite the contrary, the fact that you put so much emphasis on this game yet can't answer simple questions about it proves to me you're lying. Smiley: smile

And just to prove a point: The only white guy from Tennessee on that roster for that year and that game? He doesn't live in Tennessee anymore. Smiley: smile

Random question... my roommate has ADHD and severe anxiety, legally diagnosed. He's on a drug called Vyvanse; it's similar to extended release Adderall, but less addictive and very long-lasting (one pill lasts 10-14 hours). Like Adderall itself, it gives him a good bit of energy, motivation, and focus all day. But it sounds like what you're talking about does the opposite; calms your racing mind down enough to focus. Any idea if they work the same way, or just works with the focus part? The ADHD drugs are stimulants; this sounds more like a depressant of some kind?

STIMUMLANTS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY! /Morbo

It's a bit more nuanced than that, as it happens. I take Vyvanse and I am actually much calmer on it than off of it. It's because of what ADHD does chemically in the brain that stimulants do what they do to people with ADHD. Trying to find an article so I don't have to retype an essay...
