It's a bit more nuanced than that, as it happens. I take Vyvanse and I am actually much calmer on it than off of it. It's because of what ADHD does chemically in the brain that stimulants do what they do to people with ADHD. Trying to find an article so I don't have to retype an essay...

Oh, this guy is off-the-wall usually: pacing constantly, speaks a mile-a-minute. But he crashes; Vyvanse keeps him awake, alert, motivated, and focused. He also can't fall asleep on it and has zero appetite; it keeps him awake for the entire duration. He's already energetic, but it lets him concentrate. Sorry if I mistook what it did and just figured it was part of his symptoms though Smiley: frown

My preferred "drug" these days is the supplement soy lecithin, used as an off the shelf alternative to Ritalin and other ADHD drugs. I call them chill pills. Three of them in the morning gets me through work without any anxiety or panic issues no matter what chaos floats around me. The purified phosphocetylcoline stuff works even better, but is like $30 a bottle compared to the $7 for the unpurified soy sludge.

Nothing quite like feeling totally centered and calm to get work done. And its legal. Smiley: nod

Random question... my roommate has ADHD and severe anxiety, legally diagnosed. He's on a drug called Vyvanse; it's similar to extended release Adderall, but less addictive and very long-lasting (one pill lasts 10-14 hours). Like Adderall itself, it gives him a good bit of energy, motivation, and focus all day. But it sounds like what you're talking about does the opposite; calms your racing mind down enough to focus. Any idea if they work the same way, or just works with the focus part? The ADHD drugs are stimulants; this sounds more like a depressant of some kind?

Well, I don't have ADD (as far as I know), but at the time I wandered into Vitamin World looking for something to help me concentrate. The dude at the counter introduced me to their Neuro-PS, a purified lecithin extract. Later on, someone pointed out that boring old soy lecithin has the same stuff, just not as concentrated, and at a much cheaper price.

The Neuro-PS made me feel like someone had cast Gravity on me. The soy lecithin just makes me super chill. Almost like being stoned, but without the actual high. Smiley: lol

My wife has adhd and I've seen her on adherol before and all it ever did for her was put her into "super ****** I want to clean everything" mode.

It was great not having to clean anything but the vast amount of nagging and ******** that came with it pretty much drove me further into alcoholism.

Regarding ADHD and stimulants as a whole, ADHD has roots in neurotransmitters and receptors thereof; stimulants can affect the production of certain ones (depends on which, though most, IIRC, hit norephinephrine and dopamine,) which helps that out. It's nothing to do with the physical effects of stimulants, rather the brain chemistry effects.

On the 'just made ******* part, the first week or so is like speeding to the nth degree in some people (I was one). I didn't sleep the first three or more days, and didn't hardly eat for about five. That went away over time. I was also pretty ******* constantly grinding my teeth, etc. That was on adderall xr20 or xr30 IIRC. Since it is brain chem, some affect people differently than others. Vyvanse is actually a pretty good one. I'll switch back to adderall again for a while once my tolerance to this one builds (the downside).

I also usually take drug hollidays where I don't take any. While the jury is still out, constantly being on stimulants might be bad for your body's ability to take care of itself (one thing I read pointed to the endochrine system, but I didn't read much detail). It seems to help me, in any case, even if only mentally; it certainly doesn't hurt anything.

eh, my apperent inability to spell words longer than 0 characters in length aside, I probably was a member of the initial target study group of kids back in the day, but I don't do drugs. Besides, do any of you really want to see ME on drugs? Hell, i'm loopy enough as it is already without any help.

So, yeah, I can see how alot would go that route, but I disagree with their conclusions.

Well, the conclusion is that statistically speaking intelligent kids are more likely to do drugs, not that all smart kids will do drugs. Or that kids who do drugs are necessarily brilliant (I think we all know that isn't true).

There are a lot of other factors involved, obviously.

You don't? I feel like a higher IQ means a higher likelihood of attending college, where drugs are a dime-a-dozen. It could also be a sign of a better early education, which in turn could be a sign of wealthier parents, which subsequently could mean a lack of responsibilities and a surplus of funding for drugs.

The most rigorous drug users I've ever met were college trust fund kids. They had the means, the lack of responsibility, the curiosity, and the attitude that lent itself to it.

My fiance had a roommate from hell for a semester at her off-campus house. He was a trust fund kid through-and-through...limo's, butlers and the whole deal. He also dealt coke from his bedroom window. Smiley: oyvey

I read like 5 sources of news a night, 2 canadian ones, 2 american ones and a British one. I also occasionally will tune into my buddys show on Al Jahzera English TV. I do this while I am high because it greatly interests me, just like reading history or present.

I would say weed definitely helps keep me intelligent. Since I began smoking weed I graduated High School with honors (taking a junior average of 72% to 92% in senior year.), I achieved deans list and honors in 3 separate college studies. I do a crossword a day, read lots of news, history on pretty much everything.

Oh and I smoke a **** ton of weed. I am convinced that this study holds water. I am also convinced weeds positive effect on successful academics.

Yeah - it's not the weed doing all of that. If it was, *I* would have graduated with honors, scholarships, degrees and a billion-dollar start-up.
