Yes I know this is just j*ckas* Carneys responses but I just heard Obama say it on becks show. Does it bother you radical liberals pretending to be christians that obama is misquoting God?

I'm also curious how you feel about Obama invoking the name of God to try and save his failing jobs bill?

This is different from when Bush misquoted Romans 8:39.

Obviously, Bush was white. And red.

I'm not sure most Americans know the bible well enough to realize he misquoted.

Either way, I'm generally opposed to anyone trying to inject religion into politics. It's messy enough as is.

Not especially, no. It's one of those phrases like "Seven deadly sins" and "Immaculate conception" that even people with a passing knowledge of the Bible often assume is in there.

But it does say that you abstain from sexual immorality, which makes varus calling other people pretend Christians all the more hilarious.

Thessalonians 4:3-4 specifically.

I didn't understand this post so I went and found this......

Obama also attacked Congress, which he has in other settings derided as “do-nothing” for spending time voting for commemorative baseball coins and to reaffirm the “In God We Trust” motto while more pressing economic issues weigh on the country. “That’s not putting people back to work,” he said. “I trust in God, but God wants to see us help ourselves by putting people back to work.”

I think it's the same quote that V is referring too.

So whatever...clearly Obama was not quoting God verbatim. In fact, it's a bit tongue and cheek eh?

You mean "God helps those that help themselves?" It's paraphrasing Philippians 4:19: "And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus." Anyone who has actually been to church knows this.

Actually it's one of those secular phrases used to attack a persons faith in God. Anyone who has actually been to church knows that this phrase is often used by those attempting to undermine religion.

Lol.

You've used that phrase in support of your facade of faithfulness right here in this forum.

There's a difference between misquoting God and misquoting the Bible.

If someone is accused of misquoting God, I'd assume they were referring to those silly billboards all along the highways.

"Stop putting words in my mouth." - God

Erm, no. It's akin to "Have faith as though it's all up to God and work as though it's all up to you". Standard Calvinist doctrine.

Anyone who knows more about Christianity than what Glenn Beck told him knows this.

Now I think we need to find out which Calvinist Preacher was the first to use the Phase in his preaching.

Found it.
Quote:

That quote is attributed to Sidney Algernon (1622-1683) in his "Discourses on Government." The similar quote, "God helps them that help themselves," is attributed to Benjamin Franklin in Poor Richard's Almanac of 1757.

Earlier versions of the quote include:
"Help thyself, heaven will help thee." (LaFontaine, Book VI, fable 18)
"Heaven ne'er helps the men who will not act." (Sophocles)
"Help thyself and God will help thee." (George Herbert (1593-1633), Jocula Prudentum)

Prove it.

That said I don't necessarily disagree with the phrase just how it's used most of the time. God does want us to be the best we can be. But can we really be that without Gods assistance and intervention?

Newsflash: Founding Fathers were Deists and believed God didn't intervene in everyday life at all. Smiley: schooled

Yes, absolutely, by definition.

Being "the best we can be" by definition is the best a person is capable of at any given time, assisted or not. If you are putting all of your effort into something you are already being the best you can be, assistance could make your best better sure but then it's not "the best we can be" it's "the best us and something/someone else can be".

As a side note I love it when people say things like "God helps those who help themselves", cause you know when I quit smoking God was totally the reason my health improved and my bank account got a little fatter. Not to knock people's beliefs (ok, maybe a little) I just find it interesting the things some people attribute to their chosen deity.

While I have my own problems with invoking God in politics of a secular nation, I'm not too worried about someone mis-quoting a fictional character.
