Didn't some OOT'ers try this once? If not maybe that's just the story arc I need...

I've got some friends doing this, and am seriously considering it.

You should write a novel about a bunch of internet people trying to write novels.

3Kish words in so far. A good real life friend of mine is my "regional coordinator" this year so she's the monkey on my back I needed to do it again.

I "won" two years ago, but petered out after ten days last year.

I highly recommend http://writeordie.com/ to help. I have the desktop edition. Nothing jolts you back into frantically typing quite like the screen turning blood red...

I write a lot, but I do a lot more essays than fiction. I know better than to think I'm a decent fiction writer, so I don't participate in the month they dedicate to people that don't know better than to think they're decent fiction writers.

Thinking you are a decent writer has nothing to do with the event. You don't have to be any good at writing to procure enjoyment from the act. I always saw NNWM as an opportunity to challenge yourself. It's not always easy to find time to write, and the event helps to force yourself to make time. Just because you "know better than to think [you're] a decent fiction writer" doesn't mean you couldn't or shouldn't take the opportunity to improve upon that facet of writing.

My day job involves a lot of technical documentation. It's one thing to perfect the formatting for a guide for updating voicemails on a complex BCM system. It's another thing entirely to spit out 1600 words a day of wonderfully horrible fiction writing.

There IS a contest for finished novels for people who are serious about writing, but the majority of NaNo participants are doing it just because it's fun to write without any goal besides finishing a 50K word story. No fretting over grammar or plot holes or anything... just write. Get it out. You can decided whether it's crap or it's worth editing late after the fact.

You guys are right, of course, but it does little to ebb the bitterness I hold for the dozens of emails I'll get at the end of the month from people that want me to read their bad writing.

Better to learn how to rudely refuse. If you politely do it, they'll just assume he means this time. Do it rudely and they'll never ask again.

Better yet, write a 50k-word refusal.

I've no idea why people would write a dissertation for fun.

It should be clarified that they are 50k words combined into a coherent idea/story.

I'm rather pissed at myself. I have an idea, somewhat of an outline, but with particularly circumstances presently going on in my life, I don't have the time. Smiley: motz

Translation: I'm ******* lazy and refuse to manage my time right now to facilitate such an endeavor.
