The newest coffee shop in town is a little place owned and operated by a nice down-to-earth young artsy couple.

They have good coffee and ok food. They also a decent selection of wines and micro-brews....and chocolate.

This morning I bought a chocolate bar. It's classy Italian stuff that I paid five bucks for. I just tapped into it. There was the slightest bit of white on the corner - ya know like chocolate gets with age and/or moisture. So, I check the for a date on the thing and sure enough the best used by date was last month. The price tag was intentionally placed over the date.

I'm kinda pissed. Not that my chocolate is old - it still tastes pretty good. It's more that I was duped. I didn't read the small print. I didn't uncover the small print. My own fault for not being an informed shopper, right?

The shop has a fb page. I just now typed out a message on their wall simply stating the facts about my chocolate bar - but then I didn't post it. They're a new, little teeny small business that relies heavily on local word of mouth. I'd hate to fuck things up for them. But still, I feel deceived. If it has been an $0.89 Hershey bar that was just past expiration, I think it would not even register in my head as an issue.

Is a fb posting going too far?

I'd contact them privately first, and if they didn't try to appease you for their dishonest business practices then I'd make it public. A little blackmail should teach them a lesson real quick like.

You might be jumping to a conclusion regarding the price tag placement. It may have been an accident to cover the date or yours may be the only one where the date was really covered. I'd definitely contact them about it privately if you feel so inclined; they may even be mortified to know the candy is past date.

Don't jump to attribute to malice what can be explained with incompetence.

I agree, give them a chance to make it right. If they refuse or if they do it again, then wrath. Lots of wrath. Smiley: nod

just email them ofcall them or something, or leave private message on facebook page, and tell them that their little trick made you feel less of them.

You're right, they may not know, however, the price-tag placing is pretty intentional. It's in an out-of-the-way place and was squarely placed over the little date box.

These particular owners though haven't been there long enough to have bought, priced and put-out product that is dated. I'm guessing it's from the last guy that owned the shop.

You have the wrapper so you'd know better than I would.

All the more reason to let them know privately so they can pull it.

Yeah, if it's back stock from the previous owner, it could very likely have been that person, not the new owners, who placed the price tag over the sell by date. I'd either call or go in the store and talk to them personally. I agree that the FB posting should be a last resort.

Busy body?

Not sure what you mean. Was I being nosy by removing the price tag to see what the date on the product was?

It is only a couple bucks, but I want to be able to trust a retailer that I do business with so frequently. (Srsly, as long as the coffee is fresh hot and loaded with caffeine - I'll be back)

You're trying to convince the wrong person. He'll put anything in his mouth, regardless of it's age, and never complain about it.

Sorry a month out of date candy bar is really not worth the effort.
If I sold someone something out of date, I'd appreciate them letting me know, so that I can pull the rest of the product.

I guess we could go to our legislators and insist on regulations that insure minimum french fry temperatures and chocolate freshness.

That's not debatable.
Apparently it is if you'll happily buy old, cold fries and out of date food at full price just because you're too scared to "make a scene." That's disgusting, no wonder you're so out of shape fatty.

That about sums it up. Mistakes can happen and I'd like to know that my business had a chance to make things right before the "name and shame" stuff starts.

I'm guessing your dad has you working in one of those businesses where you guys get all offended and indignant when a customer rightfully points out that you fucked up.

This. I've had it happen once at a place I worked, after they put a stock of soda they had had in storage out after their new season began (coke and whatever the orange one is, both made with real sugar). Turns out, the sell by date on the orange was 2-3 months prior (though the cokes still had a good 6 months).

I don't remember how it happened--either they forgot to check the dates or they only checked the coke. I doubt it was the first, but it could have been. More likely is that they checked one of the coke bottles and inferred for all the sodas, since the stock had all been purchased at essentially the same time from the same supplier.

They felt so bad when they found out, refunded the woman's whole order, and pulled the stock.

It's fully possible that it's a similar situation for the OP's company. I doubt they realize that the product is dated. It would, at least, surprise me if that was the case, because it sounds like they've put a lot into their new business.

When I lived out in Oklahoma for about a year a while back, I worked at a Subway for a couple months. One of my jobs was to keep the chip shelf stocked. Coming from working at a grocery store previously, I had been trained to check sell by dates when stocking. The first time I stocked the chip shelf, I had to throw away half the chips, because clearly the other employees had never thought to face the chips so that the older chips were first before the newer chips. In fact, there were several bags of chips on that shelf that were a year past their sell by date. Most likely, customers never got to these chips, but if they had can you imagine how upset they would have been? Let alone the money that got wasted from having to throw those chips away because they were inedible. I let the manager know, and she was really happy.

I know varus likes to do his little name changing game, but why the hell did he pick "lagaga" for lolgaxe? I know he's weird, but he's not near as weird as Lady Gaga is, which is who I think of every time he uses that.

Lady Gaga is his all time favorite musician, and it makes him feel special thinking that's who he is talking to. It's so sad that I just don't have the heart to feel anything towards it.

He'll be disappointed when he gets around to those nudes and realizes that the news of her ***** was false.

There was a fairly large, regional store that two years had a big sale on soda, price almost too good to be true. My dad bought a few 12 packs, and got home, realized it was too good. Everything was about 8-10 months past their best by date.

He returned the next day to return them, the lady just nodded, gave him the refund, and set his 12 packs ontop of the 5 dozen or so others that were behind the CS Desk.

That time, they knew what they were doing, and were just hoping people would buy their expired crap and not bother returning it. News spread fast through town, and I think even now people don't go there to pick up drinks for parties.
