I know I don't come 'round here much anymore, but I can guarantee the Asylum this: I will, next summer, put forth a sincere effort to obtain video of varus playing the piano in Market Square.

Let me know when you do. I've moved to Knoxville, I'll meet you there. We'll get drunk and throw things at him.

I see you didn't bother reading my post, yet tried to respond anyways. Another failure.
According to him he'll need to respond a thousand more times before he finally gets it right.

Clearly he hasn't learned to do anything well. I don't care what it is if you want to be great at it prepare to spend thousands upon thousands of hours working on it. Fortunately for me I don't have the distractions a lot of other people have; children, finance issues, video games, cable, etc. Not sure you know this about me but I can be a bit obsessive when i'm interested in something. Last time I was this obsessed with something my vertical was 52" and I was playing ball in europe, at 6ft tall no less.

get off my knob varus. Im just saying putting someone down who knows how to at least play an instrument when you don't is pretty ridiculous, i still think you're a blithering moron.

Then again, I'm a vocalist. I hear it, I can sing it from memory in a few tries, on pitch or with improvised harmony. I'm sure any pianist who plays seriously can eventually do the same on piano.
When I sang in the school choir, I couldn't read music for sh*t. I had to learn my music my listening to the other tenors in a segregated session.

I have no idea why I feel the need to share that barely related tidbit.

It's pretty ridiculous to assume that what someone types is automatically truth or that what someone doesn't type is evidence they don't do something, but I think varus being your new friend is punishment and lesson enough for your forum folly. Good luck with that.

Bar songs? Couldn't give you a number. Popular music and jazz standards are fairly easy to memorize. I mean, we're not talking about memorizing Stravinsky here or anything.

I can read music just fine, but I'm not very good at sightreading (as in playing a piece of music having never seen it before) on piano. Saxophone, flute and clarinet I can sightread proficiently, and I'm passable on violin and viola. I don't know if that's what varus really meant when he said "site reading [sic]," and if he is a proficient sightreader on piano, I'm somewhat jealous. If he just meant playing from sheetmusic, I'm not. Though, I'm sure I could sightread bar music.

Of course, now I'm imagining someone sitting down at a Steinway and pulling out one of these:

Oh, I'm not the one worried about how everyone else views my failed athletic career. So don't worry about me.

Now go ahead and insist that you weren't really worried... you just spent a dozen posts defending it because that's how much you didn't care what we thought Smiley: laugh

Joph,

Who said that? Obviously I care what you think about something otherwise how else would I know how not to act? For example you go babbling on about something you saw on TV and I know not having cable is the right decision.

Are you just... clearing a blockage or something?

I can't believe I have spent the last hour parsing this forum for varus gems, but there it is. Fascinating.

Tell me if you knew someone was practicing on the piano avging a couple hours of practice daily in conjunction with weekly lessons how long do you suppose it would take before they could really play?

Ignoring the natural skill variable it would take roughly a month to play simple songs and half a year to start really playing some good songs.

That might be true. I used to be able to do a mezzo tenor even, or whatever the hell you call a low alto, but sometime when I was 17, I fell into peer pressure and started smoking. Worst mistake of my life.

I have heard that a male voice doing a low alto (or a higher than normal tenor) can be called an "Irish Tenor." Not sure how legit that is.

I wish I had focused more on my voice when I was a teenager. The lessons I got from my instructor were excellent, but I was way more into band and didn't enter any competitions or choirs or anything until it was too late to be prepared for college. Waste of a damn good potential opera career. Smiley: frown
