Kids in LGBT homesFollow

#1 Oct 26 2011 at 12:50 PM Rating: Excellent
My cousin posted this on Facebook, and I thought I'd share it with you guys. Some of you might find it interesting, since teh gayz are a hot topic around here.

What I found interesting is that apparently Mississippi has the highest percentage of kids raised in an LGBT family. Also, that these kids are just as happy and well-adjusted as kids raised by heterosexual parents comes as no surprise.

I feel I should feel bad that when I saw the title "All Children Matter" my first thought was "Nope, just mine." I don't, mind you. I just feel that I probably should. That being said, the issue of who has what that goes where during copulation should be irrelevant when it comes to whether or not a child is being taken care of.

Blah blah gay marriage blah blah blah second-class citizens blah blah religious right blah blah blah.

There. Now we can leave all of that out of this discussion.

Edit: In fact, the "Gay Marriage" discussion, it's various sides and their various arguments, the merits of each, and the inevitable conclusion that the word "marriage" is in essence a religious term that was adopted by the state, and gay couples should be able to hold the same rights as married straight couples, shall now be summarily referred to as #12.5. Please adjust your future posting habits accordingly.

Being as happy and well-adjusted as your average Mississippian isn't much of a bar to hurdle.

Quote:
Children being raised by same gay and lesbian are twice as likely to live in poverty as children in married, heterosexual households.

This quote from their abstract seems really out of place among all the other positive or affirmative quotes. I suppose it might have something to do with living in Mississippi than being gay, though? Too tired to review it now, I'll check it out some other time; thanks for the link!

They are making a really strong claim that the only troubles same-sex couples face are caused by the system, not by the psychological scarring of having two daddies or two mommies. This is meant to shake that up--if the children coming out of same-sex households are doing just as well as others, despite economic problems, then you obviously can't claim that economic privilege is responsible for closing the gap.

It should be noted that it's a pretty common prejudice to think of heterosexuality as a purely middle or upper class phenomenon--people are often amazed to find homosexuals in the lower classes. Ironic, since that's where we were for the bulk of our history... And because most same sex couples with children are lower or lower-middle class.
