In the name of job creation, Florida state Rep. Ritch Workman (R) filed a bill this week to bring back "dwarf tossing," the "barbaric and dangerous barroom spectacle that was imported from Australia and thrived briefly in Florida before it was outlawed in 1989," the Palm Beach Post reports.

Said Workman: "I'm on a quest to seek and destroy unnecessary burdens on the freedom and liberties of people. This is an example of Big Brother government. All that it does is prevent some dwarfs from getting jobs they would be happy to get."

Linky if you want it: http://blogs.miaminewtimes.com/riptide/2011/10/floridas_dwarf_tossing_law_cou.php

Yeah, Florida is like the drunken cousin of the south. You get a lot of the redneck rage, but also just a bunch of reaaaaally bizarre stuff that you know was thought up while people were sloshed.

I find it odd that there is a law specifically banning dwarfs from being tossed. Does this imply that tossing non-dwarfs is acceptable?

Can us non-dwarfs demand equal rights to work as a tossee?

Either way, I just don't see dwarf-tossing as the answer to unemployment.

561.665 Division to restrict licensees from permitting certain activities.—The division shall promulgate rules, to become effective no later than October 1, 1989, to prohibit every person maintaining, owning, or operating a commercial establishment located within this state at which alcoholic beverages are offered for sale on the premises, from undertaking or permitting any contest or promotion or other form of recreational activity involving exploitation endangering the health, safety, and welfare of any person with dwarfism. For the purposes of this section, the term “dwarfism” means a disproportionate or proportionate short stature most often caused by a genetic syndrome. The division may suspend or revoke the license of and may impose a civil penalty not to exceed $1,000 against any person in violation of any rule promulgated pursuant to the provisions of this section, as authorized and according to the procedures set forth in s. 561.29.

The statute in question. It seems like it was a somewhat popular sport in bars back in the 80's. Recreational dwarf throwing can probably still take place in the great outdoors, where God intended it to happen.

What about midgets? There are different classes of people who do not specifically have dwarfism but are still very small. Like, Danny DeVito...

He only supports this because of all those sweet sweet political donations given to his campaign by the 'Shorter Members of the American Liquor Lobby'.

I remember seeing a news report on this in the 90's once. They interviewed a few dwarfs who were pretty upset about the ban. Apparently it was considered to be a pretty nice source of income for some.

Pretty easy work, I guess. Wonder what the going rate was.

Anyway, I'm totally fine with them lifting the ban.

Frankly, if a dwarf wants to be paid to thrown by drunk folks in bars I think we should allow it.
