Texas will no longer honor last meal requests for the condemned.

Apparently that last dude they killed in TX ordered a bunch of food and didn't eat any of it. It pissed off a senator.

Is the last meal no longer a tradition worth merit?

They could also save a few bucks if they'd stop sanitizing the injection site.

It should never have been a tradition in the first place. I'm willing to bet the people that were killed weren't given a last meal, why should the people that killed them?

An entirely inconsequential issue, and an insult to our sense of priorities that it is even being debated.

My theory is that it's a holdover from days when guards and wardens held acquaintances for trial, and wanted to give them a last boon before they did the hemp fandango.

That, or possibly from days when highwaymen were local heroes.

Huh. Now I'm kind of interested in where the tradition did come from.

Wikipedia says that the ancient Greeks, Romans and Chinese all did it, so it's an old tradition. Some rather interesting takes on why, as well.

Considering how many people that Texas kills, this cost savings might let them put some money back into the school budget.

Are you serious?

Jezum, women spend far more time contemplating and discussing fingernail polish colors.

Raolan, you've stated the popular argument "the victim didn't get to choose and consume a last favorite meal".

The other side of the argument, I think, has roots in the whole debate about the morality of capital punishment. Obliging an individual a last meal before they're put to death could be said to symbolize our respect for life and pay some homage to humanity to some extent.

Anyway, I was listening on the radio a couple days ago they were interviewing the head chef at one of texas's big prisons following this last meal deal. He claimed he will still provide the last meal wishes to those being executed - and that he'll do it on his own dime.

Why would you want to use the actions of people on Death Row as the yardstick for your own morality? Supposedly we're better people than them.

That said, this issue won't keep me up at night.

What ever happened to compassion? Do we really have such a hard on for these people that we can't just give them an enjoyable experience before we end their lives? I'm not saying we should turn the other cheek in regards to the crimes they committed but can't we grant them one last boon?

The thing that I find ridiculous about the whole issue is that some senator, pissy cuz the now-dead guy didn't eat his extravagant meal, over-responds by simply eliminating the tradition.

Why waste a bullet? You could do the job with a recycled plastic bag.

Did he make a show of licking it all first so the guards wouldn't eat it?

Article I just got around to reading wrote:
The controversy began after Lawrence Russell Brewer, who was executed on Wednesday for the hate crime slaying of James Byrd Jr. more than a decade ago, asked for two chicken fried steaks, a triple-meat bacon cheeseburger, fried okra, a pound of barbecue, three fajitas, a meat lover's pizza, a pint of ice cream and a slab of peanut butter fudge with crushed peanuts.

Holy shit... they're throwing a hissy fit over about $30 worth of food? I assumed the guy had ordered breaded unicorn balls and snow leopard steaks or something.

Now I side with the prisoners just because Texas is being so incredibly petty. Fuck, I'd cut them a check for it if I thought it'd make a difference.

Also, lol okra Smiley: laugh

Texas would at least break even on the executions if they'd just get it put on Pay Per View like Perry's been trying to do for ages.

Put it on network TV for free, and we'd probably not have a death penalty much longer.

Yeah, no one would watch it when it would have to compete with quality reality shows like Survivor and Apprentice.

Nah, it'd just be the thing that saves CBS.

Not the incarcerated ones.

I'd have such a hard time picking a last meal. Honestly, I think I'd rather have a glass of really good wine and some cigarettes.
