Quote:
President Barack Obama brought students, parents and experts together at the White House in March to try to confront "cyberbullying." The Education Department sponsors an annual conference to help schools deal with it. Teen suicides linked to vicious online bullying have caused increasing worry in communities across the country.
Conduct that rises to the point of bullying is hard to define, but the AP-MTV poll of youth ages 14 to 24 showed plenty of rotten behavior online, and a perception that it's increasing. The share of young people who frequently see people being mean to each other on social networking sites jumped to 55 percent, from 45 percent in 2009.
That may be partly because young people are spending more time than ever communicating electronically: 7 in 10 had logged into a social networking site in the previous week, and 8 in 10 had texted a friend.
"The Internet is an awesome resource," says Devine, "but sometimes it can be really negative and make things so much worse."
And computers and cellphones increase the reach of old-fashioned bullying.
"When I was bullied in middle school I could go home and slam my door and forget about it for a while," said Hinduja. "These kids can be accessed around the clock through technology. There's really no escape."
Are we born bad and we trying to be good, or are we born good, and we acquire badness by the people we grow up with?

Given the fact that small children are sociopathic little shits, I'm fairly sure empathy is a learned behavior. At the very least, we're not actually born "good."

It's not like your scenarios are mutually exclusive, anyway. In any case, go back to freshman philosophy.

My daughter has gotten into her mind that the proper way to wake daddy up on Saturdays to watch cartoons with is to launch herself off the headboard of the bed into his stomach, so I'm leaning towards bad trying to be good.

On topic, I read some blurb in the Metro today about Lady Gaga trying to push for bullying to be a hate crime. If she wasn't already on my celebrity hate list for that weird-ass guido impression, she sure is now.

I blame Asperger's for the majority of cyberbullying.

If it wasn't for the 'spergs taking the internet too seriously, there would be no one to troll.

Varrus is a good example of this.

Honestly, I think some people need to grow thicker skins. I don't really call it bullying unless you're actually getting beaten up, your lunch money stolen, etc. You know, *real* bullying? People are dicks online because they know they can get away with it. As soon as other people realize that, the whole "bullying" label seems rather ridiculous.

If someone is actually driven to suicide based on some words on a screen, as far as I'm concerned that's Darwinism at work.

I hate the texture of oatmeal. I should try adding some pecans for something to make edible to me. I never even considered jazzing it up to make it taste (or in my case texturize) better. I just force myself to eat it for the healthyness.

Have you ever tried steel oats? They take longer to cook, but they're not so pasty and blech.

Yeah, but it takes awhile on low power (unless you have a big container that won't let them bubble over i suppose) and I've never gotten them it quite as soft in the microwave.

When I make them at home I have a little mini-crockpot I cook them in overnight.

You can get it in a grocery store. I get it at a local discount department store that carries Bob's Red Mill stuff. But I remember getting it occasionally as a kid - it came in a can. I think it also goes by 'scottish oats', but they might be something a bit different. If it's not in the cereal aisle, check the organic food area.

Around here it comes as Irish Steel cut Oatmeal in a can. The taste and texture makes you never want to buy Quaker Oats for anything but cookies.

Jonwin has gotten the task of standing at the stove stirring the oatmeal for 30 minutes that steel cut oats take. Both of us would love to know how to cook it in the cock-pot, though we will have to get another mini one, since mine already has been used once as a pickle pot for metal work.

I just use the regular recipe for like 2 servings I think it is, cook it on the lowest setting and try not to let it go for a longish night. I try and keep it under 8 hours.

My sis-in-law cooks it all night for like 10 hours - I think it's over-cooked at that point. I suppose it'll depend on how hot your crock pot cooks though.

When I don't cook it in the crock pot I settle for chewier oatmeal - which really isn't so bad (still better than your regular mushy oats).

I eat oatmeal in pancake only

1- Put quick oats into a large bowl, add milk. Let the oats soak in the milk for 1/2 hour.

2- Mix in the egg, et voila!

Put mashed banana on top and syrup.

Adding dried fruit works amazingly well when crock potting oatmeal. The long low steep rehydrates the fruit in a most delicious manner.

If I'm gonna make pancakes out of oatmeal, I prefer this recipe I stole from Men's Health.

Quote:
½ cup old fashioned oatmeal
¼ cup low fat cottage cheese
2 eggs
dash of vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg

Place all ingredients into a blender, starting with eggs and cheese. Blend until smooth. Cook in a hot skillet just as one would cook a normal pancake. Enjoy.
A little peanut butter, banana and honey to top it is my preference.

I also use the same batter to make a sort of pie crust. It works fairly well in that manner.
