You know, I'm on your side in this discussion, but this is utter ********* I know plenty of people who went to school to be teachers and ended up taking other careers because there weren't any teaching jobs available. They didn't "drop" out of the job, they never got one so took another path.

Couldn't land a job, or couldn't get one where they wanted? They're usually desperate for more teachers in the schools in the less nice parts of town, but most new teachers don't want to work in those schools (but don't have enough seniority to avoid them) so they either buckle up, or they go do something else. I'm not discounting the possibility that you live in an area with a shrinking number of kids attending school and thus a shrinking rather than growing demand for school teachers, but usually it's the exact opposite.
Certainly, teaching is a far more stable profession demand-wise than pretty much any thing else you might do, right?

Ah see, now you've hedged your terminology. I'm not talking about whether or not the compensation is fair...I'm taking issue with you saying that 100k is a bad wage.
Oh, did I say it was bad? If so, I retract. I am just saying I don't think it is unreasonable considering most teachers would only be making that at the very tail end of their career and only after investing a considerable amount of money into education and time into the profession.
I might not think it is a generous wage though, just in terms of workers with no education making similar amounts. If teachers had their education fully paid for and their entry into the workforce streamlined then 80-100K in the final years of their career would be quite generous. Given that isn't the case, I don't see any reason to begrudge them it.
