Bijou talks about selections for movie roles and not hiring a 300 lb. neo-**** to work at a rape clinic and Alma 'counters' it with an unrelated point regarding affirmative action. Cute.

I believe it is necessary due to "white privilege" & "selection", as opposed to discrimination. It is neither unjust nor prejudice to select a minority for a minority scholarship until such a time that minorities have an equal opportunity to attend college to begin with.

My views on race are quite far left though & even many of the progressives on this board disagree with my views on the subject.

Your turn!

You didn't answer the question. I didn't ask if you thought it was necessary, just, unjust, fair, right, wrong, etc. I asked you if you thought hiring a less qualified person over a more qualified person, only because of their race, is racial discrimination or not?

I answered the question (Are minority scholarships racism?): I don't believe they are & I even explained why I thought that. You disagree with me? Cool.

Alma wrote:
You have this silly thought that the reason behind the action changes the action.

We don't let convicted felons have guns, because they would be more apt to use them for criminal purposes. This is not a good reason to outlaw all guns for everybody, but a good enough reason to try & keep them out of the hands of felons. While the reasoning behind keeping guns out of the hands of felons doesn't change the fact that felons are discriminated against when it comes to owning guns, if there wasn't any logical & practical reason to keep guns out of the hands of convicted felons there wouldn't be any need to do so. The logic behind that discrimination makes it acceptable in society.

There were accepted logical reasons behind DADT (Morals, unit cohesion, "comfort", etc.), but with the progress over the last decade or so since DADT's inception (People are more comfortable around teh Gays in & out of the military) that is no longer the case.

Alma wrote:

Discrimination is discrimination is discrimination. The reasoning and logic determines whether or not it is accepted by society. If you're doing it just out of hatred, then people tend not to support it. If you have some logical reason behind it, people are more likely to support it.

What logical reason would you use to reinstate DADT?

You asked me if I thought they were racial discrimination. I told you no & even said why.

Alma wrote:

In most cases, yes. In the cases of affirmative action, no.

Alma wrote:

Except that wasn't the reasoning behind the discrimination. While they were certainly part of it, it wasn't the meat and potatoes.

What was the "meat & potatoes" behind DADT, then? Be specific.

Alma wrote:
You're only wanting to believe that to accept that as a fact.

They are facts & you're either unwilling or unable to dispute them.

Alma wrote:
If what you claimed were true, then homosexual couples would have the same rights as heterosexual couples, since they don't, it only proves that this has nothing to do with bigotry as you claim.

They don't because of DOMA, which has been covered. Repealing DADT doesn't repeal DOMA, so they are separate issues.

Alma wrote:
Who are people?

The majority of Americans. I even linked them in some polls for you. You have yet to dispute them except to say "nu uh". Disputing them would require a citation.

Alma wrote:
I say again, actions speak louder than words.

Agreed, what does the repeal of DADT say?

Alma wrote:
Just because homosexuality is popular in the media doesn't mean that people in general has changed anything. If that were the case, there wouldn't be any prop 8 debates and people constantly fighting for traditional marriages, etc. Just a few weeks ago, I saw on the news where a man was suspended/fired? for cross dressing.

Religious bigots are good at marketing, but they only speak for a small fringe group.

Alma wrote:

I'm quoting polls that say most Americans are comfortable with the gays. You're free to disagree with me, but the evidence is on my side since you've presented none.

Alma wrote:
The Army makes fun of gays ALL OF THE TIME.. The only thing now is, it's always followed by "Hey, we can't say that now, it's ok now".

Nah, but people in the Army very well might. Should we reinstate DADT so you can feel more comfortable doing so again? Nah, because that'd be illogical. If only there was someone whom could present an argument for DADT reinstatement...

Is it wrong that every time I see someone referring back to a specific post over and over in a debate, I want to go find that post and edit it to something more amusing, like a picture I took of mismatched socks in my sock drawer for exactly that purpose?
