is history now. Gone the way of racially segregated units and such. Score one for the U.S. military catching up with the modern era I suppose. I'm seeing a few celebratory parties planned, and the sky hasn't immediately fallen at least. Guess all the training worked out well in the end. Was sure a lot of drama for something that seems to be passing as a rather non-event.

Thoughts anyone?

By the way, anyone actually take that training or is in the service atm? Would be kind of cool to hear that perspective.

I know of someone who'd be more than happy to share his perspective, but he's been absent for a bit, and I don't want to invoke him...

My husband retired from the Navy about 4 and a half years ago. He's of the old homophobic school of thought of "gays are only going to be a distraction and that weakens the unit." I told him that argument is about as valid as it was when it was applied to the racially segregated units decades ago. As things progress and the new generation takes over the commands, and tolerance and acceptance grows stronger, it becomes a non-issue.

Other governments (England, Australian, Israel off the top of my head) allow their military members to be openly gay. It's nice to see that the US is finally catching up.

I hope nobody is doing atm, whether it's allowed or not. That's just asking for a disease.

This is impossible. I was informed that repealing DADT would mean that gays couldn't serve at all! My sources were quite adamant on this topic.

DADT can't have been repealed yet because I haven't been raped and/or molested.

I am hoping to skip the usual ******** that surrounds the gay marriage and DADT topics, I'm sorry if that makes reaching 100k posts harder for you. Smiley: tongue

Was chatting to a cook on a US submarine when playing WOW the other day. He said the culture on the sub was REALLY weird. No space, no Privacy, no sunlight and no fresh air for months on end makes for a really different kind of behaviour, apparently. What he remarked on was that command was lumping female submarine crew on them soon. I got the feeling he thought either it was going to make things worse, or much more strange. Or possibly be unfair to the women. Or the men. He was kind of cagey about HOW submarine culture was strange and different from the norm. I think he didn't want to put me off. Just adamant that it was.

Anyway, my second thought, after a couple of minutes, was, zomg, ALL the women on a sub would synch their periods. And for the ones that get PMS, well wasn't' THAT going to be a great 3 days a month for everyone aboard?!!!!!!!

I'm thinking that the smart ladies would get a depo shot before they descended to the depths. No periods for three months might help a bit.

The thought of being in a submarine for any extended period of time kind of tweaks me out in the first place, to be honest.

Hilarious ensues.

Also I think the thing that is different on a submarine from regular life, is being in a tube at the bottom of the ocean.
