With elections looming in the not-so-distance future, former NY Mayor Ed Koch has gone on record essentially threatening the Bama-ministration with pulling support of the urban Jewish vote UNLESS the president agrees publicly to support Israel (essentially opposing Palestine)

Koch wrote:
What the president can do is what Jack Kennedy did in the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962," Koch says, referring to a letter that Kennedy sent to Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. That letter basically said that any attack on a country in the Western Hemisphere by the Soviet Union would be considered an attack on the United States. Koch says Obama should stand up for Israel in the same manner. "That would be the optimum," he says.

This declaration was conveniently timed, or perhaps in response to Abbas's request for Palestine Statehood recognized by the UN.

US doesn't support this request, however, we've not been coddling Israel to the same extent as former administrations might have seemed to.

By attempting to show some sort of neutrality with this age-old conflict in the ME, has Barry jeopardized his chances at re-election?

Barry might not command as large a share of Jews this time around (and likely not as large a share of the popular vote in general), but I seriously doubt that he'll lose the majority after a few debates in which the GOP nominee repeatedly shoots himself in the foot on social issues.

Ed Koch sounds like a Jewish mother when speaking.

He sounded to me like a spoiled brat. What I wonder is how much influence he may still have on the Jewish communities that he implied his command over??

Mostly though, I think Obama's re-election is going to come down to the economy and more specifically the job count.

I'm curious, is this Ed Koch part of the infamously right-wing Koch Brothers who are the leftist conspiracy theorists' version of the right's paranoia over George Soros?

In other words, rich, obviously biased people who are favorites of Smiley: tinfoilhaters?

I don't think so. At least the names are pronounced differently. Koch bros pronounced 'Coke' and former Mayor of NY pronounced 'Kotch'.

Doubt it, Koch jumps from political wing to wing faster than you can say antisemitism.

Gotcha. Yeah, I know nothing about them (either of them) except that they exist and people think they run the world using shadow puppets. Or was it shadowy corporations? I hope it's the first; being ruled by a king of shadow puppetry is kind of awesome.

lmao...As it stands no one the GOP throws out there right now would lose to Obama. He's got a horrific record to run on and every solution he has involves nothing more than tax increases. What's old barry gonna promise the bums that elected him last time around?

I was going to start a new thread about it, but I'll take this opportunity instead.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/20/us/politics/obama-vows-veto-if-deficit-plan-has-no-tax-increases.html?_r=1&hp
The New York Times wrote:
WASHINGTON — President Obama called on Monday for Congress to adopt his “balanced” plan combining entitlement cuts, tax increases and war savings to reduce the federal deficit by more than $3 trillion over the next 10 years, and said he would veto any approach that relied solely on spending reductions to address the fiscal shortfall.

I can't see any way in which the GOP approves the tax increases after handily winning basically the same debate over the debt ceiling not long ago. Maybe next week Obama will propose a plan to close Gitmo with the condition that all detainees are granted full citizenship and a small estate in rural Idaho.

It's campaigning disguised as governing, but it's crafty because it forces the House GOP (and the GOP nominees) to come out strongly against it. Then, during the presidential debates, Obama can put on his most exasperated look and say "I tried to reduce the deficit, but the 'Party of No' wouldn't let me because they love billionaires and private jet owners!"

That and any plan the GOP will (or has) put out relies on riding the backs of entitlement programs, social safety nets and other programs designed to help the lower and middle class. Witness Ryan's budget or the GOP frontrunner Rick "Monstrous Lie/Ponzi Scheme" Perry.

This only works if the people who are the reason the GOP handily won the whole "no new taxes" debate forget the more important issue. Obviously, it's going to come down to perception changes between now and then, but it's entirely possible that he'll have so worn out that line by then that all it'll get is groaning and "OMG, he's not really trying that line again!?" responses from the public.

It's a pretty transparent line. And frankly, the GOP can play the same game, only with a stronger hand. They can point to numerous plans they have put forth (and presumably will continue to put forth over the next year), then point to the Dem controlled senate refusing to vote on them, and Obama insisting on vetoing them, and say that they were the ones with the plans to fix the economy, without needing to raise taxes, but the Dems were the party of "No", and Obama was the president of "No".

No one's going to fail to grasp that both sides have very different ideas about how to deal with our current economy and both sides will insist that "their plan" is the right way to go. If your whole campaign rests on just saying that over and over, it's not going to work very well. At some point, people are going to have to choose which plan they think is better. And given that the Dems so far haven't really put anything forth that isn't just a rehash of what didn't work in 2009/2010, they're going to have a hard time claiming that this time their plan would work, while the GOP's wouldn't.

It's just a double hardship on the economy that I don't think they can overcome.

what plans? I wasn't aware the GOP had any real control until last year? So really what plans did the GOP put forward over the last year?

Huh? The Ryan plan. The Boehner bill. The cut, cap, and balance bill. That's just three passed by the House in the last 6 months.

Perhaps you should expose yourself to a broader set of information sources? The record shows that the GOP has put for several real bills for dealing with our current economic predicament. The Dems, on the other hand, have mostly just given speeches and press conferences and spin. I suppose they've realized that they have a better shot comparing a GOP plan that they blocked from becoming law to some ideal fantasy that they've never put on paper, than it would be to actually put something down on paper that would have to be voted on, scored, and the details of which they'd be held responsible.

I think it's more likely to come down to what nutbag combo the GOP puts forth as their candidate(s). Because if it's any of the crazies I've seen so far, Obama has a lock on another 4 years.

The Tea Baggers have done more for the Democrats than they have for the Pubs.

I'm in this boat. There's no one in the bunch that's as appealing to me as McCain was in '08.
