There is nothing cooler than having your wide screen tv as your very own moniter. Sick finally treated himself to google tv yesterday and I'm playing around with it after everyone else had their chance. I'm typing from the wireless keyboard and it's amazingly easy to get used to. This thing is awesome! And that's just the we part. Totally a wortwhile investment Smiley: grin

Nice. Have you programmed the thing to work with your cell phone as a TV remote yet? So you can really mess with people from the road by making them think the TV is possessed?

I just picked up a Revue also. It is pretty awesome so far, and I'm really looking forward to the Honeycomb update which I keep hearing is any time now.

I was using a combination of a mac mini running boxee and an xbox 360 and I think the Revue will completely replace those once the software is updated. I already prefer the netflix interface to the xbox version (and the boxee netflix ui sucks). ESPN3 is the only thing I'm really missing.

Now maybe I can get around to playing Dragon Age since my xbox can get free from the main TV.

Everything I heard about Google TV was to avoid it like the plague, then the price drop seemed to solidify that opinion. Are they actually doing something with it or are they just working with it enough so as to not **** off everyone who shelled out the money for it? With the Revue being $100, if they plan on doing something with it, I'll have to grab one.

It is supposed to get an OS update that will also enable the android app store within the next couple of weeks. That should open things up a lot. Some apps geared for google tv have apparently already started showing up in the store.

It is a "set top box" you plug into your TV and your network connection to get your programming from the internet.

edit: to be more precise, Google TV is a service that provides programming over the internet. You receive it through either a TV that comes with GTV capability built in, or an external device such as a separate set-top box, Google-capable DVD/Bluray player, etc.

Just to be clear though, you don't have to buy a subscription to "Google TV" to use it. You just buy the box and plug it in and go. BUT, some things you might choose to view through it could require a subscription, like Netflix streaming, for example.

Basically it's an alternative to the cable company, but you still need the ISP. Since they are typically one in the same, you have to assess the change in pricing against your expectation that web content will stay free, the relative price trends of cable tv and internet, the incentives of your service provider. You also must be in an area with a competent ISP, so you can get everything in HD.

It's a product built for tech people being sold to non-tech people, which is why it's doing so poorly.

And yet tech people still have no idea why people wouldn't want all these features.

others pretty much explained it. We dont have cable as we dont watch much tv, but we do have netflix and Sick enjoys watching music videos from youtube. This allows us to have both on our big screen tv so we can watch youtube like tv, plus we also have it hooked up to amazon, (where you can download movies you buy or rent and stream it to your tv) the internet, and other things. I can also hook it up to Pandora or Napster and listen to music through our tv system, and a bunch of other cool little features.
So it's a nice alternative to cable without the large monthly bill, as well as allowing me to use my tv as a computer as well. I'm still loving it!

Cool, sounds neat. I don't own a TV though so it wouldn't save me any money. Thanks for explaining it to me.

I'm missing something here. Other then freeing up my computer, how is GTV any different then running a cable from my PC to my TV?

Well...other than not keeping your PC in the living room with your TV, not a whole lot. A lot of people keep those entities separate (aside from HTPC enthusiasts).
