It's not in Kao's favor. He's right in the fact it's damn near impossible to stop someone from going to a website with the large amount of ways to get onto a different public ip. Can't ip ban all of them.

If you a willing to lose access to any legitimate accounts you have posted with before decideing to go spammer, sure. A brand new account, with no ties to anything, with a suitably experianced operator is very difficult to track down. But people are failable. Proxies are slow, so they get turned off at that crucial moment. Or people decide they want to brag. There are other aspects of account creation that I am not going to get into but are very useful for us when tracking an attack. In this case, I have Proof's IP address. I know what DSL modem service he uses, and I have sufficient documentation of past issues to ensure that when I make the formal abuse report here shortly, his service will be shut off and he will be blacklisted from that provider. There really aren't that many service providers in a given area, and mommy is going to be really pissed at proof when she discovers the internet doesn't work anymore...

Edit: there was supposed to be another post there. it isn't there though, sooo....

Proof, you failed to turn on your proxy if you were intending to indeed mask your IP. I have the one you used there, and I have your prior activity. You want to play hardball here? Alright, so be it. We'll do it the hard way.

I always liked Something Awful's answer to this. Charge ten bucks up front for an account. Account is banned but not permanently, pay another 10 bucks and keep going. Account is banned permanently, pay another ten bucks and get banned as soon as they figure out it's you again. There's one poster who's made about $70 worth of accounts in his perma banned history.

You know, ISPs aren't in the habit of canceling the accounts of paying customers over internet forum bullying. Those "policies" are in place more to deal with commercial or legal interests. Just sayin...

Well, I can say that some ISPs DO take certain things, like death threats (however idle) for example, that seriously. Though I've forgotten just how far proof has gone.

Death threats and other threats of violence, bombs, terrorist activity, etc are taken seriously because of the liability factor.

Also, canceling one subscriber isn't going to exactly bankrupt an ISP.

Man, I remember the meetings we have when it was explained how retaining one customer was just as valuable as gaining ten new ones, or something bizarre like that. Still, that local ISP was one of my best jobs.

Well for small ones, it might be a big deal. But for something like Comcast? I don't think losing one customer is going to break their bank.

We've had to have about 6 accounts shut off over the years. I'm very familiar with the process, and we have more than enough documentation to proceed in this instance. 2 of those 6 were SBC Global accounts, so we know what is required and what they consider to be sufficeint breach of their own terms of service. Yes they want the money from subscribers, but they also don't want to get tangled up in any messes. If one of their subscribers is causing multiple, persistant documented problems, they cut their losses without even breaking a sweat usually.

Kao, can you start these threads with 'and now it's time to put on my other hat.' Just for nostalgia's sake?
