The parents were reportedly following the advice of this book.

What kind of twisted mentality could allow a person to beat a child to death? At that, how could they honestly believe they were doing the right thing?

Oh, oh. Three black children. It was a race war. The whites were just defending themselves.

Obviously, how didn't I see that before!

The seven hour beating was completely justified!

I don't believe that spanking for really foul behavior is a bad thing, but not to that extreme. He's right in that violence is unacceptable, but trying to enforce it with far more violent behavior is just the wrong way to go about it.

I've been pretty lucky, in that my little girl isn't demonic. She'll throw the occasional temper tantrum if she doesn't get what she wants, but she's two. Kind of expect that kind of behavior. Rarely lasts more than four minutes. She's misbehaved once or twice, and I've spanked her for it though. These people needed freakin' moderation.

"Spare the rod, spoil the child" is a term I heard a lot when I was a kid. While I'm not familiar with the exact context, as is it can be taken two completely different ways. Leave it to the religious whackjobs to take it as an excuse to beat the living crap out of their children.

As far as I'm aware, the modern phrase stems from the bible.

"He who spareth the rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him correcteth him betimes" (Proverbs 13:24)

It's one of those things most religious people ignore. Leave it to the fundies though...

Spanking often leads to conception.

Also, why isn't Gandalf wearing his robe?

Casual day.

Ironically, "Casual day" for a wizard is a shirt and pants. For me, it would be coming to work in my robe.

The parents were clearly whack-jobs.

I'm not really in agreement with hitting kids to punish them for hitting. I think, though, trying to spread the blame for this girls death to the author of this book about is as ridiculous as blaming video-games for school shootings.

I personally feel that there's nothing wrong with spanking one's child, with open palm, on their rear only, when they've done something wrong, but not for more than a few seconds at most. This is just terrible, though. To use any object is completely unnecessary, and cruel.

I hope bad things happen to them in jail.

A few seconds? Why would you need to spank your child for a few seconds? One swift smack to the **** should suffice. After that, you truly are just using them as a punching bag to release your own aggression.
