Thanks for the quote and for proving how much more of a class act George W is compared to Barry.

I was happy to hear the news that Osama had been killed and was more than willing to give Obama his due and "pat on the back" right up until I heard his speech.

For Barry to come out and say "When I took office I made killing Osama the top priority" is the the most sad and pathetic statement I have ever heard Obama utter.

For him to try and even hint that it wasn't a top priority during the last administration that it wasn't important until he deemed it so shows what a sad pathetic little man Obama really is.

I think you're reading into things that don't exist. He didn't criticize the Bush administration in any way. Also, you're fucking retarded.

Tonight, we give thanks to the countless intelligence and counterterrorism professionals who’ve worked tirelessly to achieve this outcome. The American people do not see their work, nor know their names. But tonight they feel the satisfaction of their work and the result of their pursuit of justice. - Obama tonight

The transcript is up on a hundred sites, there are about 4 more direct thanks and kudos to the work put in by intelligence and military servicemen/women and their amazing work that led to this conclusion. It is a shame that a complete disconnect with the reality of the situation and being so polarized politically caused you to be neglectful of the praise these people deserve.

Right? I think he overplayed his hand in what was clearly an election strategy, but I never felt like he wasn't giving the armed forces the recognition they deserved. I think you could cut out the "I gave the go ahead" parts of the speech, and it would still be perfectly acceptable as far as giving credit where it's due. There's nothing else that needed to be said.

And I'm happy that he made sure to be clear that Osama was a terrorist not just to the US, but to the Muslim peoples as well. WAY too many people fail to understand that more Muslims have died to Al Qaeda's deeds than all the other cultural groups combined.

I wasn't thrilled with his glossing over of how we entered the war, and why, but I'll ignore it because it wasn't his doing and there was no reason for this speech to become politicized over partisan issues.

Even better was in August '07 when Obama said that if he had actionable intelligence about high-level al'Qaeda elements in Pakistan, he would act on it and everyone started screaming about how this was the stupidest thing ever and it meant Obama was going to invade Pakistan.

I commend the President and his team, as well as our men and women in uniform and our intelligence professionals, for this superb achievement.

But while we take heart in the news that Osama bin Laden is dead, we must be mindful that al-Qaeda and its terrorist allies are still lethal and determined enemies, and we must remain vigilant to defeat them.

Obama clearly has to announce giving the go-ahead since it was his, and his alone to decide. An operation of this magnitude would not be decided by the usual military/intelligence hierarchy. He simply stated that after sufficient evidence was gathered, he gave the command to carry out the operation.

As for the bits about treating Osama's body with respect: to do otherwise would give more ammo to the terrorists/crazies in their recruiting of additional warm bodies.

I was just wondering about that. They said there was a firefight and OBL was killed. So I wonder if OBL picked up an AK-47 and went to town or if he was shot by a stray round or intentionally assassinated because they didn't think they'd get him out of Pakistan alive or what.

I realize that we'll probably never know.

'Symbolic victory'

Qais Azimy, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Kabul, said Afghan officials described bin Laden's killing as a "symbolic victory", since he was no longer directly connected to the group's field operations.

"This organisation (Al Qaeda) is more than Bin Laden, it may be symbolised by Bin Laden, but it definitely is more than Bin Laden"
Mark Kimmit, a US military analyst, said bin Laden's death "was not the end of terrorism, but an end of a chapter."

"Capturing or killing bin Laden has more iconic value. It will have symbolic value, because it has been a number of years since Bin Laden has exercised day to day control over operations. We still have an Al Qaeda threat out there and that will be there for a number of years.

"This organisation (Al Qaeda) is more than Bin Laden, it may be symbolised by Bin Laden, but it definitely is more than Bin Laden," he said.

It is, however, a major accomplishment for Obama and his national security team. Obama's predecessor, George Bush, had repeatedly vowed to bring to justice the mastermind of the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington, but never did before leaving office in early 2009.

I mentioned to Flea that most of those morons probably weren't even ten years old when 9/11 happened.

I suppose it was either that or "Osama bin Laden (D)"

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that OBL was never actually charged with the 9/11 attacks, but was wanted by the Libyans for a 1994 attack in Libya, and by the Americans for some Embassy bombimgs in Kenya and Tanzania in '98.

But as long as the Boogeyman du Jour is dead, then hey! Lets party...Smiley: rolleyes

Pretty much sums it up. I think theres gonna be a few busy weeks coming up.

I do wonder how long it will be before the next boogeyman who is the cause of all the worlds problems is identified? My guess is it wont be long as Politics abhors a vacuum.

#123gbaji, Posted: May 02 2011 at 2:57 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) And that most liberal excuses rely heavily on re-interpretation of the facts. The criticism at the time (and I thought it was in 08, during the campaign, but whatever) wasn't about sending in a hit team to take out someone like OBL, but was about firing air strikes across the border to take out joe random Taliban and Al-queda fighters. It was also more about his amateurish response to the question. You don't say what you'd do. You say something like "We wont leave any options off the table and would craft a plan of action based on the specific conditions of the targets, the danger to friendlies, and with consideration of the sovereign territory of our allies". That's the sort of answer that doesn't pin you down, or restrict your actions, but allows you the freedom to act when it's really necessary.

I woke up around midnight central and thought I must be dreaming. I made myself get up, leave the room, splash water on my face, then go back; CNN was still saying the same thing. I was dumbstruck. Perhaps that's not the right word, but it sort of sums things up. I went back to sleep until a bit before three. I've been up since. Just in the last 30 or so minutes has it really begun to sink in. It's pretty overwhelming.

I was atop the tower not long (either 1y10m or 10m... I forget which,) before it went down. I stopped by ground zero about five years later. As with many, I can still tell you exactly where I was and what was happening the day it happened. I honestly didn't think this day would come; I figured his health would take him first, and I echo Joph's sentiments on his death for sure.

BTW, "Buried at sea" if no one mentioned that in response to whomever asked. Probably not the best idea, but at least we did it within a day of death.
