The military explanation is chemical warfare.
The Canadian Military uses the same reasoning, or so I've been told. Do you guys actually get equipped with a gas mask? I can't imagine, given the world's capabilities, that a gas mask is enough anyway, seeing as many chemicals available for warfare can be just as damaging by having contact to skin, not even having to bother with inhalation. I'm thinking its just an outdated policy, but that's just an assumption.

Gas masks, pills, shots, special clothes. We got a lot of crap for possible chemical attacks. It basically all sits at the bottom of a duffle bag.

So you don't get the gas masks that make you look like camouflaged storm troopers, you actually get the "just fits over eyes, nose and mouth" masks?

We got the Stormtrooper looking masks, and my gunner even got the one that you hook into a vehicle.

Only picture I can find that looks similar. Mine had the filter on the side like this.

So, is it a blanket no facial hair policy or just no beards? I can't see how mustaches or goatees could interfere with the operation of that monstrosity.

The mask is supposed to make an airtight seal around the face, and the theory is that any beard could prevent that from happening.

Oh, and mustaches are okay as long as they're trimmed to the lip.

I believe there is a length requirement also. I have a "baby-stash", so it's no concern with me. I heard people were trying to argue to get the beard requirement removed while in garrison as the probability of a gas attack isn't likely. I don't want a beard, just my sideburns and goatee...
