Literary analysis is ******** pure and simple. Learn how to enjoy literature for the sake of enjoying it, rather than analyzing it to death.

Of course there's value in literary analysis, unless you're happy with a completely superficial read. Most people are, I guess.

I'd rather be actually writing stories myself instead.

Yeah, I learned how to actually write English papers in later classes, with professors who actually bothered to explain what they really wanted. I still hated it.

You didn't learn how to write an English paper until after a 3000 level University English class?

I guess it's true: Degree=/=edumacated.

That being said, I really don't buy your argument. If right wing pundits, and presumably people from Fox are reporting or talking about it, it's clearly not missing the main stream media.

Fox is the mainstream media. You don't get to brag about your giant viewership dwarfing the competition and then pretend that you're somehow counter-culture. Fox is more mainstream media than CNN, MSNBC, or any of the rest of them.

No, I didn't learn to write one well. Not my fault the 2000 classes were so full of remedial dimbulbs I got As on papers for just making sure they didn't have any typos.

I apologize for not making it clearer, I was referring to the network news programs, which still have the widest reach and I believe, although I could be wrong, the highest audience (as a group, because they are largely identical). Cable news is still just cable news.

Why were you in a class of idiots who were given A's if they could find the spell-check button? You don't have to answer that.

But isn't writing a competent paper like early-mid high-school material?

Your public school tax dollars at work!

Anyway, someplace along the course of finishing an English degree, I discovered that I write ****** English papers and I hated literary analysis. It was too late by then; changing majors a third time would set me back a year. So I doubled up on all the non-lit classes the department offered instead.

I assume though that you're not denying that Fox is as mainstream as they come. Otherwise, the term "mainstream" is completely worthless except as an empty talking point. Which I'd hope most people realize already anyway.

Absolutely not. They are no less an entertainment venue than any of the rest of the cable news channels. That's why I felt the need to clarify. That said, it was Xsarus who mentioned mainstream media, not me. I didn't feel the distinction was worthwhile.

When I hit 8th grade, I had a teacher I hated. We all hated her. Why? Because we all worked our asses off and she gave us D's and C's on papers.

By the end of the year, when I was getting A's, I loved her.
I learned more in that one year than I did in the following 6 (actually, I learned nothing about writing in those, as I was in classes with people who DIDN'T have that teacher, or who were fine getting C's-F's that they didn't learn anything. So we only ever did remedial grammar and writing techniques, and I was bored to hell).

Because that one teacher was willing to teach and not coddle us through, I was a better writer then than many of the people who are about to graduate with English degrees in my school. It's amazing what a good teacher can do.

In the same week we have a congressman from New York accused of sexually harassing a male aid. It's a married guy with kids. The allegations are sexual in nature. Why aren't they being more broadly scrutinized? Why didn't the largely liberal audience here @ the Zam decide to post about him?

He denied it? So what, everyone else does, too. That's no good reason not to dig in to it.

If it makes you feel better, he's resigning effective 5pm Monday.

And to make you feel worse, he was a "no" vote on health care reform so his departure makes Pelosi's job of passing the Senate bill a little easier.

I now understand why The GOP hates the Gay.

They won't have the votes to hold anything up in the senate if their closeted senators get outed.

Wait, hold the phone, if Samira's Science is correct, and Catwho is an Anti-varus, if they touch, we could be rid of Varus forever?

Time for a Road Trip!
